Hi

My galant is sounding a bit sick - I think it is the clutch release bearing as it makes a noise most of the time other than when the clutch is depressed to the floor.

Then again it could be the gearbox!!

Does anyone have any ideas? I am planning to go to my local clutch spedcialist for a quote/opinion but might do it myself depending how difficult the job is - can anyone give advice on accessing the clutch ??

Thanks
Richard

It could well be the input shaft bearing too. To change the clutch you need to remove the driveshafts, the gearbox mount and the two roll stops. Also remove the clutch connection and the starter motor etc. Then drop the engine/gearbox at an angle using the engine mount as the pivot point. remove the box from the engine and then yu have access to the clutch. Also at that point you can remove the bellhousing and check the input shaft bearing.

If you have not done it before, then I would suggest buying a workshop manual CD on ebay (or better - pay for membership here) and expect it to take a full weekend.

Nick

Thanks for the advice. The input shaft bearing sounds likely - I have bought a workshop manual and will probably give it a go....

Good luck!

There is a members guide on how to remove the gearbox from a VR4 in our members library. I guess the V6 will be easier. Maybe a few photos could help? Worth £20?

Either way, let us know what you find and how easy it isn't!

I've changed the bearing on Hordak - the hardest bit is getting the gearbox out - once it's on the bench it's quite easy. You can't remove the bellhousing as the shafts are clamped down in place on this - you undo the casing bolts and the giant circlip under the black cover at the end of the gearbox and the casing slips off. The bearing is held in with a clamping plate - depending on the state of the bearing you undo the plate and jiggle the whole shaft assemebly out, or if the bearing is comletely fubered take the assembly out then the remains of the bearing. Fitting, as they say, is the reverse of removal.
