Very common problem - Search the forums for "Torque Converter Seal" and you'll find loads of threads about it.

In a nutshell, the ATF seal on the automatic gearbox fails and leaks. The seal costs about £10, but you have to split the gearbox off the engine to get at it.

just make sure that you keep a VERY close eye on oil levels. The gearboxes are sensitive to the amount of oil in them and if you let it go too low you will kill the gearbox which will triple the repair bill

That's right! I know from my own experience that once fluid level drops some very crazy things start happening.

I could not reverse up my driveway for about 5 minutes after starting - whenever going around right hand corners I would lose all drive.

When going down hills it would snap down a gear completely of it's own volition - sending the trans. into "limp home mode" (flashing N symbol).

That was all due to severe fluid loss from a failed torque converter seal. As I had driven the car like that for several months I elected to have the AT completely rebuilt at a cost of $3550 so prevention is definitely better than cure!

Unfortunately, yes. The seal isn't one that just leaks a little bit - it gets progressively worse to the point that it nigh-on runs out if it's left long enough!!:speechles

It sounds like you have the same problem. Have you got a VR4? I'm not sure if Non-VR4s have the same issue with a poor original seal design, but the oil leak you describe is exactly what you'd expect to see.

About £12

But yours is a Man not a auto so it will not be the TC seal yours sounds like it could be the input shaft seal. Its in the same place but different design.
