Using the search I found a couple of interesting threads on replacing the final gear with a 3.73 ratio from http://www.teamrip.com/NEW_EVO_STAGE_1_TRANSMISSION.html

I couldn't see anywhere in those threads wether this was just a strait swap or not, has anyone actually done this yet to confirm. Brad, you were one of the people who was thinking of doing this?

yeah it goes straight in, haven't done it yet though

Does it require any other gear swaps the 5th, from an auto I think it was, seemed like a good idea as well. Do other gears from the auto box "just fit on"? Are there complications from a mongrel box like this?

nope, they are quite different unfortunately, the auto won't fit on.

It isn't a mongrel gearbox, mitsi make the gearbox with those ratios for evo 7 and 8's

SOooo the 5th ratio is from Mitsi as well as the final?

On a manual car the Evo 5 speed internals are compatable with the VR4 internals.

The manual and the auto are not compatable, except for the output shaft.

I don't know how many parts are compatable between the Evo GTA and the Tiptronic VR4.

Nick - I'd guess most parts swap between the GT-A and VR-4, every ratio is identical

Dale - the 5th is from mitsi. The final isn't

And the Evo gears are stronger I take it? So for best strength and settings swap the evo gears 1-5 over and the final from that other company?

I have seen no evdence that the Evo gears are stronger? But there are different ratios available.

There are aftermarket gears that are stronger for the Evo box, which must therefore fit ours.

Brad, I'm sure you are right about the GTA box compatability, but I have never seen the evidence to prove it, so didn't want to put up potentially false info. Put it this way - if I neede a new gearbox and there was a cheap GTA box available, I'd give it a go!

Doubt they are stronger. They all look the same.

Nick - it won't bolt up because the bellhousing is different, but if your internals were shot, an EVO GT-A gearbox might be an ok place to start.

But if my gearbox was shot, I'd have my own bellhousing to swap on to the Evo box! :P

If your gearbox dies, I expect you to install a real gearbox!

we had a member who's gearbox died on his trip from Wellington to Auckland for a club meet, that was caused by a severe lack of oil in it tho...

i had a input shaft bearing fail in the gearbox,
nothing else was damaged in it thou
