Well, I've decided it's going to happen now. Been contemplating a jump from the 2.0l GLS estate to a v6 estate, but decided to go the full whack and go for a Legnum VR-4.

Been up to see Rich's Legnum that is up for sale, and WOW! I was blown away as to what the Legnum VR-4 is capable of. Thanks to Rich and Lilly.

Just gotta get insurance quotes now, get the pennies ready for hand-over and hopefully I will be amongst the VR-4 owners in two weeks time.

I have been lurking on the forums for a long time now, but have just paid up for full membership. I look forward to many years of pouring money into the VR-4.

Oh yeah, my current GLS will have to go soon. Keep an eye out in the For Sale area. It'll be a spares or repairs jobbie though.

:iloveyou: Club VR-4

PS - I need a name for my (soon to be) new VR-4. Any ideas?

Yay! You'll have some fun with a VR-4! Just beware the thirst O'Doom! :D

As for a name? Get the car first.... The Wizard doesn't choose the wand, the wand chooses the wizard! ;)

Will keep an eye out for your GLS - Why spares/repair?

Good man... I've had mine for 10 days & I'd park it in the bedroom if I could get it up the stairs. They ain't cheap to run as cars go, but they're the funnest way to spend my money that I can think of.

My best quote was from Performance Direct (closely followed by lifesure), Admiral were winning with an online quote but when I phoned them up they said they don't do Legnums ???!!!??? You may fare better than I did.

Looked at the photos of Richy's Legnum & it looks nice - the exhaust mods made the insurance a bit too rich for my postcode tho'.

I'm told by my daughter that black, white & silver cars are boys, all others are girls; by that convention your STB leggy needs a boys name.

The test drive WAS fun! I always thought I had good right foot control, but the VR-4 just asks to be pushed... a little more....more....more.... and before you know it, you've run out of road! Hehehe. I'm prepared for the thirst though - got two jobs now to pay for it! :afro:

Wise words about the name... I will wait... patiently... :scholar:

Spares/repairs because I think my gearbox is about to fall out of the car!!! :bigcry: The underside of thecar makes a horrible clunking sound when engaging from 1st to 2nd gear (4 speed auto) and when I drive over uneven road surfaces. It just feels wrong; the vibration of the clunking goes right through the accelerator pedal. Got an issue with the steering too - vibrations and grinding when doing stationary or parking full locks with the steering. Fan belt screeching, but I changed it in Feb this year.

Really good to meet you last night. It is also so nice to hear you are still as blown away with the acceleration as you were last night.

Hopefully we will see you again in a couple of weeks :)

So far, so good....

Been on the phone all afternoon for insurance quotes. As it turns out the last quote of the day was the best.

Here's the breakdown -

Online loads of times first but not many companies list the Legnum VR-4 as an option! :inquisiti

Quote 1: (Online) Performance Direct - £992.25 (£450 excess) Fully Comp
Got a call back in minutes from their sales team who then gave me £1000.60 fully comp with no claims protection, but £893.00 without protection (same excess).

Quote 2: Sky Insurance - £941 (£350 excess) with like for like cover on any replaced parts. (£656 for TPFT)

Quote 3: Swinton (special insurance department) - Couldn't find car on system - unable to quote!

Quote 4: Lifesure - waiting for call back (30 mins call back time 2 hrs ago)

Quote 5: Academy - £1957 /Grrr

Quote 6: Hyperformance - over £1000 /pan

Quote 7: Alan & Alan - on hold for 10mins until line went dead :speechles

Quote 8: A Plan Insurance - £755 fully comp (£300 excess - £80 glass excess) With legal cover and replacement/courtesy car in even of claim.

All in all, not too bad but I was hoping to get to £600 or so for a 27yr old with 5+ NCB. But I'll continue looking through till next week...

Atik....
Before you accept that quote, give Adrian Flux a try as well. They normally try to beat most quotes. Failing that, try Sky once more and say that you have had a much better quote and could they match it.

PaddyB
20-06-2008, 04:27 PM
If you look over my thread (Leggy cost of ownership) in UK chat there's a list of what I was quoted for insurance. Weren't too impressed with Flux (babes apart that is). Strange how A plan quoted me loads more than Performance Direct & it's the other way round for you - postcode lottery I suppose.

I found mine by going on comparethemarket.com - they all rang me - never a moment on hold.

Admiral do do Legnums - they insured mine - I paid £400 for the year with no no claims discount (and a previous write off on my record) - I'm now sitting with 2 write offs on my record but Admiral have come up trumps for me again...Say to them that you want to insure a Japanese Import - it is called a Mitsu Galant in the UK but the Japanese spec was called the Legnum - they will find it from that as that is what I said...

Big Ian
21-06-2008, 11:33 PM
i'm through A-plan ... (fully comp 5yrs + NCB) they wouldn't quote me on my new VR4 but just said ahh that'll be no change to your current premium £440 for my impreza .. which to me mean's the VR4 was cheaper to insure than my Impreza?

Lifesure gave me the best quote & cover £370 i called A-Plan to cancel my policy but i got told i'd have to pay a penalty to cancel, Lifesure for me next time ;)

Thanks for the advice. I will try Admiral tomorrow. Didnt think they would know of the car.
Tried Direct Line today (current insurers) but got over £1400 :inquisiti

Pitslayer - I am a paid up club member now, and even with the 20% they quoted £941. Not happy with that at all /pan

BTW, the guy I spoke to at A Plan (Lee) seemed to know what car I was talking about too! He also said that because I was driving a Galant already, he was able to get the price lower cos I have 'experience' driving a large powerful car :speechles

Well, £755 is sustainable enough for the first year. Fingers crossed now... just gotta get the car so I can start /rally

I just tried Admiral. No luck. They list the Legnum as a 'Galant VR-4 Estate Import'. Not as a 'Legnum VR-4 Estate Import'. They quoted me £1100 for their 'Legnum', but there is simply no chance that I'm taking a risk with them cos if I do neeed to claim, they see Legnum on the car but Galant on their system = NO PAYOUT!

Still looking for insurance...

Just taken a policy out with Sky Insurance. Well chuffed. £755 fully comp, but costs extra cos I have to go monthly instalments. Still, happy with a total of £856 on a group 20 car!

Only 3 days and counting now... Thursday 10th July 2008. My new birthday! :D

Atik
07-07-2008, 04:56 PM
Yep, it's been a long wait Lilly. Thanks for being so patient too. :iloveyou:

Initially I was happy to wait til mid August to buy me a new car, but as my current one is falling apart, I thought no point in renewing the MOT so decided to go for it early. My current MOT expires on Saturday, so the VR-4 arrives in perfect time.

Now, the mods... still looking around but I like the idea of an EBC, angel eyes, and a carbon bonnet (in time). No need to touch the induction, exhaust or tints - thanks to Rich.
Aah, the stereo upgrades! Probably do that overnight on the day I get the car! :afro: Hmmm, gotta rip it out of my current car first.

This weekend will be fun!

Got the stereo out of the VR-4 now. Relatively easy job even though the stereo was bolted in behind the dash. The trim around the gearbox first then the dash pane and all is accessible.

Its started raining, well its like a tropical storm here! So I decided it wastimefor a spin in the wet. WOW. The car grips so GOOD! Almost undistinguishable from the dry! Plus was able to keep the windows open slightly cos the plastic thingies (technical term) over the window kept the rain out! So now I'm back in. Gonna get some lunch and head back out to take the stereo out of the GLS. Contemplating whether I should leave the GLS amplifier wiring in place and buy new for the VR-4 or strip the GLS and transfer it over. Two lots of work required the first way but a valuable £20odd the second way.

Either way, the new stereo is going in so I can play my music from my USB stick.

And yes, I know /ttiwwop

Pictures soon... But you've seen the car in the'Widows Weekend' thread anyway.

Keep enjoying - I know I am!

I've pushed the car a little in the dry now and the grip is phenomenal. The power this car has is just brutal!

I pulled out from a side street onto an overpassing dual carriageway. Had to cross over a bus lane, a single lane, a slip lane (onto and off the overpass) the outside lane of the over pass and then into the inside lane. I managed to pull in between two cars (who were both traveling at 50mph). In the GLS I wouldn't have dared that manoevre.

New stereo is in, but alas, the speakers are shot! Well, both drivers side front and rear are crackling at 8-10 out of 35 volume level. Gonna wait to fit the amplifier and do the door speakers at the same time.

Another thing I just spotted, but I doubt this is a standard fit on VR-4 is the strip of red LED lights on the side of the door. I know there are lights on the inside corner of the door for safety when you open the door, but these lights are a strip of red LED on the side profile edge of the door. Well cool!

Mental note - they are called wind deflectors! Thanks elnevio.

I need to make a new thread for "Newbie VR-4 appreciation" /pan

Oh yeah, Rich, the exhaust is flaming mental!!!! Loving it myself, but all my passengers so far have said it'd give them a headache after a while! Told them to get a lift off someone else next time! :D
Will the de-cat drop the noise level at all? Or is that just for emissions reasons?

I've driven the car for a total of 100 miles so far. Fuel guage at halfway point. Filling up again tonight for a round trip of 160 motorway miles. Looking to have a third of a tank left on the guage when I get back. That would satisfy me on fuel consumption.

Ummm...... Flaming being the objective word here Atik....

Get a friend to follow you on an open stretch of road and they can watch the flames. Just ask Heath, Jane ( the HJMs) on here or Jimbo. They followed us back from Donnington once and commented on the flames coming out the back.

I just wished I could have seen it for myself.

De cat was taken out for MOT purposes...

I don't think that it makes it any quieter:inquisiti :lipsrseal

Newbie question alert...

For MOT purposes, I need to show a catalytic convertor in place and working? But once MOT is complete, I can take that bit out and fit the 'de-cat'?
So generally, which of the two setups will be quieter?

Aside from that, I'm still loving this car. 2nd fill up of fuel tonight. Couldn't do the round trip as posted earlier, M6 was closed as a result of the earlier fatal accident. Managed 139 miles from 30 litres of Total Excellium 97RON fuel. Put the good stuff in tonight, V-Power!
