I'm in the process of tidying up my engine bay and one point that I've become stuck at is the engine cover.
I'm sure I'm not the first person to have a go at re-painting the tired looking cover so has anyone got any tips for doing a good job of it? In particular I'm wondering how I'm going to paint the lettering on the cover ....

I cleaned and painted my engine cover few weeks ago. I just covered the surfaces I didn't want to get painted with plastic tape (red parts, texts). Took over one hour to clip the tapes :P

And here's the result, before-after:

I had to do some serious repairs on mine as there were cracks everywhere. So I took some 2-component glue/pasta to fix the cracks and to strengthen the whole thing. Then sanded and cleaned it, then repainted it.

And after enjoying it's great looks for 2 months or so I dropped the y-pipe on it last week when we were replacing the lifters & sparkplugs. I'm not easily pissed off let alone swearing, but that time...

Still in bad shape, but done some repairs here:

Held together while the glue-stuff dried.

I masked off the entire red section with letters, but not the Mitsubishi letters & sign. After the silver paint dried I very carefull used a paintroller that I gave a good spray with the silver spraycan paint and then ever so gently rolled over the twin turbo intercooler letters. Worked perfect for me.

Wel.. until I dropped the Y-pipe on it... pretty much unrepairable....

What a shame after all your hard work! I am also keen to do mine sometime and will need to fix one minor crack before painting. What sort of paint do you guys use? Presumably it will need to tolerate the heat!

Yeah I used some heat resistant paint first, but that looked horrible, then switched to regular paint and that seemed to give no problems after the 2 months it was on it was still as good as the day I put it on.

I made mine come up quite nice just by scrubbing with Swarfega and a nail brush.....worth a try anyway.

Got one from WODJNO yesterday and just done some minor repairs to it. After finishing up to let it dry / harden I thought "let's give the broken one a chance too... again" and as I saved all the parts it broke into, it came together quite good! Only missing one little piece at the bottom.

Will get back to repainting it upcoming week... might have a nice and shiny spare one at the end of the week :)

OMG I just looked at the date of the first post and realised how long its taken me to finally paint the lettering on the engine cover! lol. I painted the black and blue bits a long time ago but only recently had the patience to do all the lettering slooooowly by hand, looks better but not a job I'd like to repeat any time soon!

Mines currently in the garage, it needs a bloody good gluing, sanding and a full respray...... I might tackle this in the not too distant future....... I am feeling inspired after this post......

And Oblivion, yours looks brilliant, good effort......

Black and blue seems to look a LOT better than silver and red.

Mine is cracked too. Bearing in mind how good Oblivion's looks in black and blue, there must be a market for someone such as Peter M to make a batch of them in carbon fibre; or would the amount of detail required be prohibitive?

Yeah, a great day Den, weather held up, and nice premises to boot. Met lots of members, some i didn't know, some i did. Car made good numbers as well with a slight adjustment, feels so much better on pick up and initial acceleration. Figures are in the Eurospec thread. Waiting for Atik to put pics up. All in all, a really worthwhile day, shame you missed out bud.

Like I say wish I coulda been there would of been good to meet some new members and chuck the car on the rollers but I'm just a slave to the work machine at the moment, I'll have to get along to the next local meet wherever and whenever that'll be
