View Full Version : It's time for a meet! - Taupo 26 July

Ryan
25-06-2008, 02:55 AM
It has been a while since we had a fully fledged meet don't you think? I'm not talking about going to Brad's house and working on cars either - although that is always fun.

No, I'm talking about the mini road trip variety. I know fuel prices are extortionate at the moment but hey - you only live once!

Any takers?

Not sure how far everyone would want to go but here are a few suggestions:

Auckland - Mt Maunganui (213km)*
Auckland - Wellsford / Warkworth (60km / 80km)*
Auckland - Hamilton (126km)*
Auckland - Coromandel (168km)*

* quoted km for one way trip

http://tvnz.co.nz/view/news_national_story_skin/775936

Well the last of the above article says:

The worst offender caught on police speed cameras was recorded at 210 kilometres an hour in a 50kph zone.

Might be considered the worst because it was in a 50km/h zone though.

Ryan
25-06-2008, 06:17 AM
Ouch loss of licence for 6 months... $500 really isn't that much though for that speed, quite lucky in that respect. I wonder what car he was in?

210 in a 50 zone - LoL ... almost as bad as Brad! :)

school holidays are 4th-21st july, so we should do it on the 26th of July, all the cops will have been working overtime during the school holidays so there will be less of them on the road, AND there will be less traffic on the roads because everyone has just been on holiday

Right guys, don't let the relative silence from the Wellington end have you believe there won't be some of us there cause we will be. /rally

Who's going and how many cars we'll be bringing up is being discussed and once we have a better idea what's happening we'll post details up.

And remember, it's a longer trip for us so gas cost is an even bigger issue so some car pooling looks likely.

So don't worry, we'll see you guys on the 26th......................:pimp2: and we are treating this trip as a trial run for the long talked about and promised Taupo track day................./pan

Unfortunately we are out of the country till beginning of August, otherwise we would be keen as to meet up - as we live in the fine metropolis of Turangi (50 km south of Taupo) and couldve provided a few people with beds (and heaps of lounge floor space)... it wouldve been great to put some faces to the names, and to see all the fine machines out there.
So if you guys can hold off for a couple of weeks after the proposed date - we would love to meet up too.

I have added a poll so we can see who might be interested in a National Meet on 26 July.

Can someone suggest a common Taupo Meeting place - Good for photos. e.g Huka Falls ?

Robotnik123
06-07-2008, 10:39 PM
With regard to Huka Falls, am pretty sure you can't really see the falls from the parking lot, so photos of legnums with a waterfall background probably won't be a goer. We probably need something by the lakeside.

Hmmm, scanning Google satellite photos I see a large parking lot near the lake front, off SH1 (Lake Terrace), about where Lake Terrace, Mere Road and Taharepa Road intersect. See how the parking lot is obscured from the State Highway by a belt of trees. Anyone familiar with this place?

Here's another suggestion - note the circled area in the map.

It is a scenic lookout on the south side of Taupo town. The parking area is elevated and you get a good view of the lake. It is next to a yet to be developed (ie. empty) subdivision. It's offset from the state highway, so should not attract too much attention.

Actually come to think of it, the subdivision next door might be more suitable....

I have added a poll so we can see who might be interested in a National Meet on 26 July.

Good idea to have a poll but the results may be misleading. Easy to assume all those named are bringing cars, but from Wellington several attendees are likely to be car pooling with others so attendee numbers aren't the same as car numbers. This is highlighted by the posts worry about parking in Taupo. This may not be as big a problem as the poll numbers may suggest.

Possible amendment or addition to the poll would be to indicate who's attending and bringing their car. Just a suggestion............/rally

There's a number of quite spacious carparking areas along the lake shore, south of the main shopping area along SH1. I wouldn't be too worried about attracting attention. Much rather park in plain sight than to try an hide and have the cars out of our sight, especially during say a sit down lunch, if that's what we end up doing.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Don't leave cars unattended at Huka falls - it is one of the worst places in NZ to have something stolen from your vehicle. The lake shore would be the best and given that its winter then you will have plenty of parking spaces which are free and there is the hole in 1 (hitting a ball onto an island) which is good to watch. Passers by will also get a chance to view the cars together. Just my advice as a local. Also wouldn't worry about the police!

The fuel prices would have to go fairly high for me to stop driving the VR-4.

But then I moved house to within walking distance of work, so have no fixed weekly fuel cost. Highly recommend it actually.

Oh, and if you think about it it could be that without having to spend fuel to go to work and back you may be able to afford another $50 per week or so on the rent.

And of course it reduces CO2 emissions and is better for the environment to live closer to work and drive less.

It might be an idea to invest in an inner city apartment while prices are in a lull I think, because that's where people will want to live (closer to work), not in the 'burbs.

Thats one thing that pisses me off at the moment, every article about cars talks about raising co2 rates and even in car reviews in magazines they are listing the value for cars. When will they realise that NO ONE CARES unless they are buying a prius, and those people should be shot anyway. It is especially hilarious when they list the figures for V8's and sports cars :) Those drivers don't care in the slightest

Well it might matter in the future. Was reading an MOT discussion paper the other day, proposing among other possibilties, imposing higher import tariffs on high CO2 emitting cars.

Have a read of this if you're interested: http://www.mot.govt.nz/assets/NewPDFs/Improving-Fuel-Economy-Paper.pdf

All that rubbish is based on the ASSumption that CO2 levels are driving global warming.

I haven't researched the topic to any extent myself, but the arguments I have seen suggest it is bollox. And when I see it discussed between "professionals" it always comes across that those arguing that it is bollox have much more persuasive and accurate evidence...

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out if a graph is useful, yet for some reason the graphs I have seen from those arguing for CO2 causing global warming are just rubbish. Either they have a weak data set (too short for long term cycles), they show trends which are meaningless as they don't map against any significant and MEASURABLE environmental affect and my favourite was one where I saw that for the last so many years they had changed the way they measured the environmental parameters (taken from 4 sources such as ice core samples etc to just directly measuring) and then try and say that the rapid increase that just coincides with the change in measuring procedure, is proof of rises in CO2 level driving global warming.

Opposed to 1 graph from the other group which shows global temperature vs CO2 level and which clearly shows that the CO2 level trails the rise and fall in temperature.

Er, can anyone spot the more useful presentation of data... retards.

Now, putting that rant aside... I am open to proof either way, however from my poin of view so far, the evidence saying that raising CO2 levels are not driving global warming has been much more convincing and presented in a much more believable manner. Then I ask myself, why is this? Surely it isn't just that the anti "CO2 levels driving global warming" crowd have better communication skills with which to make their lies so much more convincing?

anyway, I shouldn't hijack the thread... nothing to see here... move along

I'd have thought you'd be more inclined to lose your license in a bimmer. Why you'll be cruising along smoothly at 200km/h plus just like on the Autobahn if you don't watch yourself! ;) At least the VR-4 is limited to 180km/h and isn't quite as smooth at highspeed, so you have a better idea of the speed you're travelling at.

Regarding the rather unfavourable weather outlook, I for one, will be most unlikely to go if the Taupo weather is going to be wet.

Weather is the big unknown here. I don’t mind driving in the rain but if it’s going to be horribly wet in Taupo, or me, a lot of the fun will be gone if we can’t stand around awhile, look at and talk about our cars.

Jan, Jeremy and I have discussed whether options and we don’t know of any undercover area in Taupo we could use as an alternative meeting place.

So in summary, if it looks crappy in Taupo, I'll be saving my petrol money to use for another day and hope we can postpone this trip to another date as I'm still very keen to meet up with all you guys.

Just my two cents worth.

What do others think?
