Can someone advise, and excuse my ignorance. I have a knocking on my VR4 engine and remember reading an article on this site about cleaning hydraulic valves, I think they are called.

It mentioned changing the old several times over several days and finally putting high grade oil in the car.

Can someone point me in the right direction to this article?

Try searching for lifters. There are several suggested ways of doing the job, with the one you suggested being one of them.
