View Full Version : expensive bov vs cheap?

eliminating things at the moment and it completly slipped my mind that the standard bov on mine, might have disintergrated. so is there any real difference, bar sound between a 30 quid bov and something like an R2D2 or SSQV?

Robotnik123

Probably makes some difference. Look at the specs of the HKS SSQV for instance - a superior design that does not leak under high boost, etc.

Does the SSQV recirculate air to the MAF or not?

No its VTA

And there were no issues with the car leaning out or anything like that?

Nutter_John

No before i had the mapecu2 mapped it would richer than before , when you dump via a VTA the ecu does not know that you have lost that amount of air and fuels according to the amount it thinks you have

i have my eye on a dv something or other for sale. im not running high boost, performance modifications are on the back burner till either my turbos let go or i find a boost leak. wanted to try a cheap one to eliminate the standard bov

If you think your bov may be goosed I've got the standard plastic one I took off mine when I bought the R2D2. You're welcome to try it and see if it makes a difference. I guess it's been on the car since new and therefore been subjected to 62,000 miles of (potential) abuse. Looks in very good condition though, considering it's plastic and where they're fitted. May be a good opportunity to get under the car and have a look at some of the pipework re: possible boost leak. I'm sure my girlfriend's brother would let you use his ramp for a while when he's not busy: probably lend a hand too 'cos he likes these Leggys!

Sounds like too much trouble to hunt down. Why not just get an EBC and wind up the boost? That'll fix your performance issues. Of course then you will need an SSQV or similar.

SSQV's crap! Get an R2D2............... woo hoooo!

i tried winding the boost up, bought an MBC dawes device, put it on the car and all it did was hit horrible amounts of fuel cut, then took it straight off only tried it in my mates yard and it was near impossible to drive, pulled it off, in the car somewhere now, cant use it till i declare it on my insurance anyways :(

sard r2d2 for me,

dont buy a cheap BOV, the have a tendancy to leak, and the seals will rip eventually. you get what you pay for,

How about this BOV, any opinions - can switch from recirc to VTA as needed:

I would just get a GFB or turbosmart hybrid Jan... Or a std Evo 9 one(as they are metal rather than plastic)... :)

The style bov's are cheap and nasty copies..

Edit - just likt the below one Jan..

Or instead of getting spending your lifes savings on a HKS or R2D2, why not get a Nomad. Without a doubt the best sounding dump valve, they dont leak and they are less than half the price!

apeman69

If it's a Bailey DV24 then their info reads:-

The DV24 single piston dump valve is designed for turbocharged cars that use a carburettor, throttle bodies or fuel injection with no airflow meter.

Thought we needed dual piston type BOVs for our cars!

Ooh! Like the look of that! Would that fit the VR-4?

Eurospec

Yep, thats the one!

Ninety quid and it will not leak. Critically it wont open under vacume at idle and cause the car to run like a bag of nuts like a lot of DV's do (inc some of the big name ones). Gowf has one, i run 2 bar on mine.

Of all the dump valves we sell, this is by far the most popular. crap for evos though for some reason.

Cheers,

Ben.

THe Baileys BOV you need is DV26 - i have silver one on mine and has been fine, its twin piston type and can reccomend them VTA it is just a simple pshhhh sound not as nice in my opinion as SSqV or the r2d2 but i was desperate for a dump to coin a phrase ;-)

Can you provide a link where they sell the recirc kits in the UK? I have an SSQV on my manual VR4 and it's getting a little tiring after the initial fun I had scaring pedestrians and cyclists.

I prefer the stealth effect of recirc - every Type-R I pass thinks I'm trying to race him!

Turbo_Steve

Actually, I've got a recirc fitment somewhere...if I can find it, you can have it for the postage.

Before you make that change, however, look up the different "fin" colours. I started with Purple (were very loud and whiny) then changed to gold (was even louder and very very Whooshy) and then change to silver (made a very brief "Chuff" noise which I really liked, and stuck with.

Alternatively, sell me your HKS so I can fit it to my Evo as a recirc (Evos HATE dumpvalves!) and you can have a phase 1 HKS which is much quieter :)

I got a second hand recirc valve for about $80, it said EC5W on it and japanese writing, I never worked out what brand it was but it did a really good job, didn't leak and sounded quite good.

It was purple and silver.

Thanks Turbo_Steve - but it's recirc I want not a different Blowoff Valve sound. I'd gladly swap the SSQV for a good aftermarket recirc that doesn't leak with higher boost (as opposed to the OEM item).

I thought sticking with the SSQV in recirc mode would be as good as any Forge item or similar?

If you do find the recirc kit I'll gladly pay whatever they cost - I just can't find a UK supplier!

Just found this on youtube that demonstrates the various noises of the HKS SSQV :pimp2:

I think I may invest in a quieter fin for mine before I fit it onto my new car as it was starting to get a bit tedious after the initial "new toy" period wore off.
