You have to go to the Embassy in London to get one the same day. Costs a fair bit and takes about 3-4 hours typically.

And yes I think you do need one for Europe.

You do need one for Europe - I thought as well as the embassy you could also visit the passport office?

Kyle - Check that out on the passport website (google will find it for you).

You need a passport with Sea France for sure !

Extract from here: http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/fees.asp - looks like it costs £114 same day

"A Premium same-day service is only available on weekdays if you make an appointment before 16.00 in London, 13:30 in Liverpool, 13:00 in Peterborough, 12:30 in Glasgow and Newport and 12.00 in Belfast and Durham. On Saturday, the Premium same-day service is available for appointments before 11.00. The waiting time for your passport will be four hours once the application has been accepted and a receipt supplied by the cashier."

Travelling within two days
In this case you will need to apply in person at one of our offices using our Premium same day service. There is an extra charge for this service (see How much does it cost?) You need to make an appointment to apply at a Passport Office by calling our Adviceline on 0870 521 0410 .

This service is not available if you are applying for a first passport, a full / total name change to your existing passport, extension to a passport, or to replace a lost, stolen or damaged passport.

The Premium service is a guaranteed service whereby you deliver your application and collect your passport on the same day, provided your application is received before the cut-off times of 16:00 in London, 13:30 in Liverpool, 13:00 in Peterborough, 12:30 in Glasgow and Newport and 12.00 in Belfast and Durham. On Saturdays the service is available to applicants with appointments before 11am.

You can only use the Same Day Service for the Renewal or Amendment of an existing adult passport - cost is £114.

You still need a passport to travel around the world, Europe or not, it is a legal requirement.

That's rather good. In NZ, you have to wait three working days for a passport.

Do people in Wales or Scotland have a different passport to the English by the way?

Nope.

Too bad, I am sure quite a few would want a different one.

News this morning announced a three-day strike by ... passport office workers! ... starting this morning. They reckon they'll still deal with emergencies though so you might be OK. Best of luck, mate!

Kyle, if you get stopped in Holland without a passport you get a hefty fine.
Germans are allowed to travel to and from the UK without a passport as they all carry personal ID cards like the ones the UK wants to introduce. I don't know about anywhere else in Europe.

The flights to Duss are expensive as you want them same/next day you need to book in advance to get cheap ones.
