Firearms, whether you love or hate them, have shaped the course of human events since their inception ~ 14th century.

Today we feature the following weapon:

Can anyone guess what it is and what made it famous?

it killed someone?

Wrong.

I guess Colt Single Action Army - the "Peacemaker". And cowboys of the old West made it famous. If I was getting a colt 45 it'd be an M1911 though me thinks.

difficult to imagine how else a gun could become famous. I doubt it cured polio or went into space

First revolver?

Colt single action is correct.

The Colt single action revolver is one of the greatest handguns in history! It was produced for 67 years (1873 - 1940). It was reintroduced into production in 1956 and even today this weapon is available from Colt, although made in very small numbers and to considerable expense.

It is a simple, robust and easy to use weapon which became synonymous with the American cowboy...

The example pictured is chambered for the .45 Colt round.

Ingram Sub-Machine Gun SWAT use them

Yep that's the one, the MAC-10 (Military Armament Corp model 10 developed by Gordon Ingram). Used by some SWAT teams, but also by many criminals especially drug smugglers and 'gangstas'. Because of its rather high fire rate of 1000 to 1600 rounds per minute you can hold it sideways gangsta style and spray rounds and still stand a decent chance of hitting something. It appears in several movies and video games.

I don't see the attraction either tbh, but if we start limiting everyone to car related posts it's going to get very quiet very quickly.

You want a revolver? Look on Youtube for the Smith & Wesson Model 500 - It's practically a hand held cannon!

Mmm, the "R2D2" :) The two frigates in the Royal New Zealand Navy are equipped with the naval variant of this Close In Weapons System (CIWS).

Very complicated piece of kit. Think it would exceed the Legnum's towing capacity somewhat though Kieran :P

Those battleships hurl their big missiles some 20 miles or something don't they? (With the big deck guns)

It doesn't really falls into 'firearm' category...

Yeah, that clip mentioned that, it was something like that, certainly 20+ anyway.... So I could be sat in my house, with the USS Iowa parked in the local Duck Pond (it'd fit, I'm sure!) and drop a salvo of shells on my former workplace (an hour away by car in rush hour!) :afro:

Hardly. It's still a prototype and certainly not portable enough to be carried concealed :) I can't see any practical application for this weapon apart from perhaps a static defence role. The logistics of feeding ammunition to this weapon in the field would be a severe headache... Actually, more like a migraine.
