apparantly this "weather bomb" is the worse storm we have had in 10 years

The weather hasn't actually been that bad! We left Bombay at 8:40 and got to Taupo around 11:40, most of the way I had my wipers on Intermittant or (I) and sometimes off.

From Taupo to Rotorua they were off or intermittant about 50/50 , and it was a similar thing to Whakatane, maybe more like 60/40 though.

Today on the way back they were on intermittant or (I) most of the way, and from Bombay to home I had them on (I) or (II) as it got a bit heavier. Nothing to really worry about at all!

I quite enjoyed the drive back to Auckland and achieved far better fuel economy too ;) Did 190km to 3/4 full and back home the gauge was sitting either just above or on 1/2 full - 288km total.

As for this "weather bomb" (what a ridiculous term, it has to be said). My power went out in the middle of my history channel article on the Bataan death march which annoyed my immensely as it stayed that way until 0050.

This morning the power went off again at 0900... apparently some branches fell on some lines etc etc.

Am pleased that I came out unscathed from this road trip (ie: no fines).

It was good to meet Jan, Aaron & Michael and Matt.

Was good to see William pop around as well - pretty random too. William, those Brembos really look good on your car, was the first thing I noticed when you alley docked next to me :)

hi-flyer = Matt

Over the weekend I did 240km to 30.5 litres, 211km to 29.5 litres, and 275km to about 35 litres. Almost all was open road driving, a lot of it was fairly aggressive :)

It was good to see everybody in Taupo. I am sorry I could not stay longer and that I missed Matt and Jan. We almost did not get off the mountain due to the weather! We had to dig the Leggy out of the snow and pour warm water over the door seals to get the doors open - they were frozen shut solidly! Needless to say, she fired up first turn of the key.

I also had excellent fuel consumption with the tailwind back to Auckland. Have a look at the frozen up engine compartment - I had to let her idle for about 10 minutes to thaw the snow.

Hi guys. Good to see you all. Just got back from Rotorua this evening. The weather was fine in Rotorua for most of the day. Tonight (Sunday night) heading over the Desert Road, there wasn't any snow, but there was a thick pea soup fog, so I was crawling along at 50km/h at times. Anyway, hope we can have another national meet again one day, maybe in the Spring or Summer when the weather is better.

Ja there was one facelift Legnum that drove past which Brad encouraged to park up... initially the guy turned in but then maybe his missus said that we all looked like nutters and they drove off again :)

Apart from that and one trigger mauve galant, didn't see any other VR-4s.

Cheers Whenn, yeah, it was quite an experience for me coming from the tropics! First time I heard the external temp sensor went "BEEP BEEP" due to the temperature being less than zero!

BTW, when I filled up at Taupo I put in 48 liters for 476 km.

The snow in that pic is at a ski resort, atop a high volcano. The rest of NZ is pretty much a tropical. Think Tahiti with a few more sheep frolicking about. If you ever visit, pack light: tee shirt, shorts, swimming trunks is all you'll be needing! ;)
