Hi guys wonder can u help please, have been onto the dealer re: service history and cam belt. They tell me as far as they are aware the odometer reads kms (63K) and so cam belt is not due yet, but will sort it - so no problem there. But when I test drove the car the speedo definitely read in mph. Is this combination possible? and if so is conversion easy? Sorry for my ignorance, but Ikeep getting conflicting info. The good news is that all being well I can pick up the legnum a week on saturday.......... Hurray!!!!!!

Cheers

Not sure about your speedo, but the big service is due at 45000 miles or 5 years whichever comes first. had mine done at 42000miles. If yours is close to either get it done. it will be cheaper in the long run :-D The dealer reckoned that the AYC fluid was as black as old oil in mine!! Also when you get the timing belt changed ask for the power steering belt to be dne aswell, these can fail with horrible results :stunned: worth the extra £45 quid to have it done.

nick-f1,

If your speedometer is reading miles per hour, I'd expect your odometer to be clocking up in miles too, which would signify that a kph/mph converter had been installed. The difficulty now is to try to establish what the odometer read in kilometres at the time the conversion was done, so that you can work out the exact mileage that the car has done.

When I bought mine, the dealer told me that the speedo was in mph but that the odometer read kilometres, but I proved to him that was not the case - both speedo and odo were in miles. It took about a month for them to ascertain (from the Colt Car Company in my case) when the conversion was done and I got a letter from them to state what the kilometre reading was on that date. From that information, I can prove that my car has done 15,821 miles less than it shows on the odometer which might make a difference if I ever come to sell (but didn't on my previous Subaru Legacy RS-B :undecided ).

Hope this helps.

Brian

Get on the motorway, and drive at 60 mph for 10 mins. If your odometer goes up by 6 it is miles, 10 it is km. Alternatively drive a route you know or in convoy with another car.

Having said that, I would think it is unlikely to be different as I would expect both to be driven off the same signal. It depends on how it was converted, I guess.

I am sure Nick and Brian are spot on - if the speed is in MPH then the Odometer will be in miles - the VR4 uses an electronic signal so it is unlikely the conversion would be just the speed, I am sure it does both.

Like Brian, I have documentation confirming what the odometer read when it was converted to miles, think mine reads around 80k now but has actually done around 55k miles.

Follow Nicks tips on the motorway or a known route etc and is easy to check ;)

I thought that you had to have the mph converter fitted to pass the SVA test maybe I'm wrong though ????

My speedo stopped all together just after buying it it too the garage 20 mins to fit a new one so it can be a big job

Thanks Guys ( I can see its gonna be confusing with all these Nick's being Nick myself) for your help. I guess I shall have to wait until next Saturday to verify this, on the test drive the speedo definitely read in mph and I think the odometer did as well, it registered 13 miles travelled in a circuit around Poole. So this is easy to check, but Poole Mitsubishi are convinced it reads kms as they have serviced it for the last 2 years since import. But all my enquiries have been via the dealer so its difficult to check and he's fedup with all my questions and phone calls so I'll have to be patient I suppose. But anyway I shall take Brians advice and try to verify the Kms/ mileage for the future.
81 quid for the cambelt alone according to the dealer is that about right?
Thanks again
Nick

81 quid for the cambelt alone
mitsubishi quoted me 250 quid+vat, supply only for all three belts and a tensioner for the cambelt the tensioner was 80 quid and worth changing while the engine is in bits anyway, but I gave Camskill a ring and they had all three belts and tensioner as a kit for 75 quid all in. A local garage I know and trust who has mitsy workshop manuals fitted them all for 90 quid. There are savings to be made(as long as you don't have a warranty to maintain).

If unsure as to the service history or mileage, do a full "D" service and start correct servicing from that date.

I was and did that. It cost a bit, but the peace of mind was worth it.

Mitsubishi Dealer here in Christchurch NZ said that cam belt change around $NZ1000+GST (vat) and they change the water pump at the same time as it's cam belt driven and the new belt can make it leak. Changing it at the same time saves money in the long run, apparently. They also mentioned a figure of about $70 plus an hour's labour for AYC fluid change. Where are the requirements for A,B,C, D services published? I've got the translated Japanese owner's manual.
Are there any Haynes etc workshop manuals for these or related cars? The UK one from Haynes only seems to do the 4 cylinder ones.

Regards

Pete

this early thread (http://www.clubvr4.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=1380) has a service sheet for A,B,C,and D service.

Hmm. That's interesting... I wonder if they're mixing it up with the 6G72?... You see, i've often read that this engine (used in the GTO) should have the water pump changed along with the cambelt to avoid the pump leaking, or even worse, siezing and stripping the cambelt teeth , but I've never heard that recommendation for the 6A13.

I've just had a look at the 6A13 service manual I've got, but it isn't clear whether the pump's driven by the crankshaft pulley belt or via the cambelt directly. I think it's the cambelt, in which case the advice, whilst perhaps not as critical as with the 6G72, is probably still sage.
