Is yours FUBAR Dave?

yup sounds like it...its dumping it out out through what i think is the input shaft seal. problem is the oil is blacker than oil thats been in a diesel for 50k :s

i just moved it and it noisy as so i think the input bearing has gone which has blown the seal out...or somethihng like that!

and trade me and kempys have nothing.

i could strip it but if the metal has gone through it it could be expensive!

We might as well pull it out and have a look? I'm free sunday if you want.

Bearing and seal didnt cost carsten too much, plus his bearing desintegrating didnt seem to affect the internals at all :?

cheers mike. i have to find somewhere to do it first. im just concerned about how the oil is looking. but yea, when i find somewhere to do it we can drain the oil and go from there

Subaru ETA
28-07-2008, 05:24 AM

Gly
28-07-2008, 06:57 AM
my oil was blacker than a black thing too...

seal was less than $20 from mitsi (its sorta special and i couldnt find a aftermarket seal suitible)
bearing was about $40,

ill help out too if you want a hand,

my box has been fine since *touches wood*

Gly
28-07-2008, 06:58 AM

Subaru ETA
28-07-2008, 07:00 AM

Subaru ETA
28-07-2008, 07:03 AM

Gly
28-07-2008, 08:08 AM

mpau009
28-07-2008, 08:28 AM
brads house.. thats halfway to hamilton :P

I'm good with that. If we're not going to be putting it back in the same day, would 10am be a reasonable hour? I reckon we get a stop watch going, between the three of us, and one trained mechanic i reckon we can do it double quick:afro:

Subaru ETA
28-07-2008, 11:08 AM
yup 10 is fine... i tried to find somewhere closer to civilization but couldnt find anywhere sorry!

yeah it shouldnt take too long to do i wouldnt imagine...ill have air tools and big hammers that should make light work of it! :D

Kenneth
29-07-2008, 01:11 AM
just to add, my first VR-4 destroyed the bearings also without damaging the gears. Mechanic was surprised at the time, but it seems to be happening with others too on these gearboxes.

29-07-2008, 04:57 AM
Perhaps you could take the opportunity and convert your car to tiptronic. Tiptronics are the best transmission for a highway cruiser like the VR-4 anyway! ;)

yes but some of us want to drive properly, with real manual gearbox's /rally

bradc
29-07-2008, 06:03 AM
And we know how to use handbrakes :)

/ducks and runs for cover

Subaru ETA
29-07-2008, 06:45 AM
hahaha....yea ill give the tip tronic a miss aye :p

and ken, i was at mitsi today picking up a camblet and the adviser there rekons he has never heard of anything ever going wrong with these boxes and doubted it was the box...

well it makes the noise with the clutch out and it goes away when you put it in...well im no rocket scientist but that sounds like gearbox!

Gly
29-07-2008, 07:08 AM
in put shaft bearing, same noise mine made

Kenneth
30-07-2008, 03:57 AM
My mechanic was of the opinion that Mitsi are forever putting bearings into their gearboxes which are only just strong enough. As such they always go, especially when you increase performance or thrash it.

Not sure if you could get stronger bearings though?

Gly
30-07-2008, 08:09 PM
there standard size NTN bearings,
so shouldnt be hard to get stronger ones?

Subaru ETA
31-07-2008, 07:51 AM

bradc
31-07-2008, 09:04 AM

Yeah Nah.. i can read dickytims instructions a few times:P

Sorry i cant do saturday at all. I was thinking sunday too, as per your post.. I thought you were going to bring the car round on saturday, and take the box out on sunday..

Ah well, if its still in there on sunday i can give you a hand. Plus youre welcome to borrow those bolts to make it easier to get the transfer case off, but with gas prices, its probably easier for you just to have a look for thread with the sizes in and buy some near you..

Oh yeah and print out all the instructions and the clutch release thing BEFORE you go to brads with his 1990's speed internet:afro::thinking:

bradc
31-07-2008, 11:08 AM
