Just found this fluid whilst browsing the Castrol website - an ATF SP3 compatible fluid from Castrol; TQM-ST fluid:

i might use it next time I do a trans flush.

Found another SP3 compatible ATF - Valvoline Maxlife ATF Dex/Merc. This stuff is stocked at Repco NZ.

Can't see any harm in saving $30 on another brand if I can. Am sure the Castrol stuff is fine anyway.

But a trans rebuild is $3000 or more

Yeah that's true. Still Castrol and Valvoline are quite well respected and I have little reason to doubt that if either say their ATF is SP3 compatible then it is and the risk of either killing a VR-4 transmission would be pretty much nil.

I agree with Jan, the Castrol TQ95 in my AT has done nearly 20 000km and my gear changes are fine. The fluid is also still a good colour - however I do have AT cooler fitted so this may serve in prolonging the life of ATF somewhat.

That said, I don't doubt that it is a good product. As Jan said, it is a good product and I would not hesitate to use it again.

Of course TQ 95 is not actually 'SP3' compatible per se, their TQM-ST product is. Still I bet it's close enough seeing as it's a highly friction modified fluid just like SP3 is.
