View Full Version : Front o2 Sensor Removal Help

Hi dudes..

Anyone removed the front o2 sensor using standard tools?

I took off the manifold guard type thingy in order to get a spanner around the 22mm nut for the o2 sensor but I only had a very limited amount of space and as I was using a fairly long tool I couldnt get much power into loosen the damn nut. After an hour or so of messing around I found out from googling you can get a socket which is made for this reason!! /pan. So I put the manifold guard back on and im here asking the world of club vr4 for any advice or tips on how to remove it using standard tools before I go out this weekend to hunt one of these special sockets..

Just thought il share the link of where I found out about the removal tool.. In case someone else has the same lack of knowledge as me on this subject!

I got mine from halfords. It did the trick nicely.

I've used very long screwdriver to lever this 22mm spanner...

It was couple of years ago, but I remember this situation clearly... Totally pain in the A to remove if it's stuck... Happy that VR-4 do not have them. :happy:

Thanks for everyones input.

I picked up a sensor socket today and tried it but the damn thing aint moving for sh1t! looks like I got my self mission on my hands!

It needs to be marinaded in WD40.
This means getting it warm (not hot) so that it's all expanded, and then sprayed. Wait a bit. Run the engine a bit until it's hot(ish) and sprayed again (if it turns into smoke it's too hot), and then give it a try with the socket. If it doesn't budge, then "rinse and repeat" (i.e. warm it and soak it again).

It will go eventually with this method.
The alternative is for the brave: take it for a serious thrash, so that the pipe is red hot. Leave the engine running, jump out, dive underneath, bash the socket on and it's likely to give.

forgot to add, if you try the brave method, have some really stout gloves handy, as when it comes out you will accidentally touch it at some point. I always do, every time and the blisters are killer.

I didnt get a chance over the weekend gone but I plan to attack the sensor this weekend coming.. Just thought il keep those interested updated.

Ok I just managed to replace the sensor which is at the top of the manifold, I did it at the end but cutting the wires and using a deep socket.. with a extended rod to a ratchet..

Now I got to find the second front sensor! anyone know where that is?

Ouch! the second one is a tough one! You'll need to get right underneath the car, and it is on top of the pipe of the front pipe before the cat.

Worse case is that you may need to drop the front pipe to get to it!

Thanks for the quick reply scc. il probably try this weekend.

Did you do it youself? If the sensors on top of the pipe then I guess I have to remove the pipe, as the sensor's probably on solid and lack of space. Seems like a bit of mission.

You don't have to remove the pipe if the sensor comes out ok.
It can be done in situ.

I got a garage to do it. They put the car on the ramp, and armed with a spanner. they manage to undo it, and replace it with the new one. 10 minute job.

oh that sounds great.. I put it off last weekend because I thought it would be a mission. I going to be doing it this weekend at some point, hopefully a spanner is all it will take.

The last time I looked, I've got 4 sensors.

Two pre-cat on the down pipes, and two post cat.
