VR-4 Insurance;

It's madness I tell you, madness, utter madness......

I think I have bought the wrong car....

Innocently, and 4 years after I sold my 99 Galant VR-4, I enquired about insurance, initially with the favoured names on CVR4 - Lifesure and Sky

Lifesure - full NCB, 3 points/£50 fine, no mods, car at RAF Station with military guard of the site so fairly safe I thought....

Galant is Group 20 plus 40% loading...

Quoted £791 - UK Galant more expensive than Legnum it seems...

Sky too busy to deal with my telephone enquiry, promised to phone back, didn't and then website cannot take my address so cannot log me for 'callback'

So I stuck with my current insurers, Ford, £56 something...
Fully comp - Euro breakdown - Euro cover (90days per trip) with no exclusions

...but only until 8 Sept when my current policy expires

Will look again for a full year quote over next few weeks

But insurance, it's madness I tell you, madness, utter madness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used confused.com a few weeks back to see what the increase a VR4/Legnum would be over my GDI.

I think the best quote was around £180 (Fully Comp, but £450 Excess) from Swiftcover. Pretty good, I thought.

Try direct line, they once gave me a very good quote for a VR4.

Admiral did an excellent quote for me when I was looking for a VR4 last Christmas - the premium on my V6-24V with them came in at £80 less than a VR4.

Yeah, when my Legnum was standard I was insured with Admiral and their price was great.

As for the specialists.... If you're older then Lifesure seems good. If you're younger or have a rather ninja'd up Legnum, Sky are a good bet I think. I've just (yesterday!) renewed with Sky for another year.

Rees when i first bought my VR4 I was 23 , managed to get a quote of 700 ish from elephant which at the time I thought was reasonable.

Of course thats 2 years ago now so things may be different, and of course its a bit of a post code lottery

Well my car is guarded 5 days a week by the RAF so how unsafe can my postcode be...?

This is RAF Cranwell of RAF College, Cranwell so all we do is train officers and provide other courses for tri-service staff and service the planes, sorry that should be aircraft, that are used for training...

...and have fly-bys and aerial displays by all sorts of stuff inc Typhoon and BBMF...

And the quote for my residential address is even worse...

I did not ask for the figure, too frightened

We are near Emley Moor mast but even if it fell down it could not reach us...

...but our village of Skelmanthorpe is riskier than an RAF Station protected by the MoD

I don't Know what my full insurance quote will be....I've just paid an extra £165 to change from the Grandis to the Legnum...
When I had the Evo I was paying approx £1100 and I was 57 when I had that...I'm 59 now...No Claims and no points ( at the moment ) so I'll be interested to see what L.V. come up with in December!

See what you can look forward to when you're older??! /pan :D Might be worth taking your advanced driving test with the IAM. They have an insurance arm (IAM Surety) and I have just renewed through them for £200. Better than the £334 I was quoted by my current insurer, First Alternative.

Thats interesting. What value did you put on the car?

How much does IAM test and membership cost?

(I passed my test once, but that was years ago!)

I thought I would run a quote for a VR4 through Moneysupermarket.

Swiftcover was still the cheapest at £147.54 (+ £29.36 tp protect my NCD) with Voluntary £450 Excess. Bu with no Excess, Performance Direct at £205.51 was the cheapest.

For some reason, a Legnum would be £297.61.

And Swiftcover was HIGHER for my GDI at £150.46!

Thats interesting. What value did you put on the car?

How much does IAM test and membership cost?

(I passed my test once, but that was years ago!)I put the value of my 2000 UK model VR4 estate at £8K. (Bought for £8.5K about 9 months ago). Joining the IAM is £99, which gets you your training, entry into the test, the books and your first year Associate membership. Once you pass, its £18 a year for Full membership.
/Edit: If you've taken the test and passed, best route is to contact your local IAM group via the website and see if you can take a retest, or if the original pass is still valid. That may cut out the high 1st year cost.
Their insurance arm is looking to undercut any quote you've got. I used Moneysupermarket and got a quote of £173 from Liverpool Vic. IAM undercut that to £150, but ended up at £200 once I added in a few more "nice to have's".

mmm it was a LONG LONG time I go I passed, I mean like nearly 20 years ago !

So I should probably do the training again, and then the test. Is it true they've dropped the commentary in the test?

no i had to do the commentary driving in mine

Guess what, I could NOT been found on the system...

Quote from AutoDirect £474

close to my fee with Auto Direct i payed £430 for my Impreza RA and they just swapped over the details to cover my VR4

Lifesure Quoted £370 but i would have had to pay a penalty to Auto Direct if i cancelled my policy with them :(

Is it true they've dropped the commentary in the test?Admitedly, it was 11 years when I took mine, but the commentary was optional. My examiner told me if I was comfortable in giving a commentary then I should go ahead, but would not affect the test if I didn't. I did a 2 minute stint on my first test, but didn't bother on my refresher a year ago.

I have ins for the VR-04 for the rest of my Ford policy - upto 08-09-08 - cost £56

Ford have now sent renewal for the next year for the VR-4 and all I could think of was Lifesure, come back all is forgiven...

Ford are asking for, calculated from admin fee of 10% extra...

A paltry sum of £1034-70!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stating the obvious but why dont you phone them?

chris g
18-08-2008, 04:24 PM
Well, given they already quoted a completely excessive figure, I will state the obvious, I am not interested in phoning them.

They want my business, they contacted me to get my details so they could phone back and then have not done so...

...obviously they do not want my business
