Who can't wait for it to come out? I can't! I do hope that it is a return to their earlier style of music though.

I'd lost interest in them after the Black Album really, although I saw them live a few times afterwards (including one memorable occassion on which Kirk Hammett didn't suck golfballs through a straw).

Just been doing a bit of reading and the new one could be very interesting. Rick Rubin was a huge figure in the early days of the thrash scene, so hopefully it will go back to the old days a bit. I think Trujillos influence will be positive too. One of my favourite bassists ever, on a par with Cliff.

Shows how much attention i pay, this is the new Metallica album, yes?

Perhaps they'll manage to extract themselves from their arseholes, but i wont hold my breath. St Anger was awful and i cant actually remember the other 2 ones before (which were pretty poor also, but not as poor).

Every time they have a new album out its always hyped up that its a return to form and it never is. Having said that Rick Rubin has done some of my favourite albums in the past (Reign in Blood) so i'll reserve judgement until i hear the finished article.

Whens it supposed to be out?

Can't make my mind whether go for coffin version or just standard CD.
But yes, can't wait to stick one into my player.
I was a bit disappointed with St.Anger and I've heard that the Death Magnetic would be in similar style but much, much improved.
Just 10 days to go but some songs are already available on you tube and some fan sites. Sounds good :2thumbsup

Metallica went soft after the "black" album IMO.

Nevman
03-09-2008, 10:14 AM
I think they went soft ON the black album and after that, they've changed style (load, reload) which was very interesting and good experiment.
Garage inc was a very good album -> back-to-the-roots IMHO.
S&M, again interesting experiment which has divided Metallica fans into lovers and haters.
St. Anger - big come back to old style Thrash metal - didn't work out at all. I tried to get used to the album but never managed to get to like it.

Let's hope the new one would be a masterpiece like Master..., Ride... or And Justice... But is it at all possible? We will see soon.

I like all of their Albums, including Load and Reload. On Load I like Until it Sleeps, King Nothing, Hero of the Day, Bleeding Me, and Outlaw Torn. On Reload I like Fuel, Memory Remains, Devils Dance, and Unforgiven 2.

I also like their live performances from that era, including 1997 at Fort Worth, Woodstock 99, Irvine Meadow and S&M.

I LOVE the S&M performance. In fact if it had King Nothing, Creeping Death and Seek and Destroy, I'd only ever need to listen to S&M for the rest of my life!

Nevman
03-09-2008, 11:41 AM
I do love Load - Reload albums as much as S&M. As a matter of fact, I have S&M on VHS, CD, DVD and 3 or 4 singles :D
The only album I don't like is St. Anger. I put it into my player every now and then but it doesn't sit there for long. In my humble opinion they've blew it.
Have you seen Some kind of Monster, Brad?
What do you think about it? After watching it, I don't blame Jason Newsted that he has left Metallica. He's shown that he has a big cojones and the only thing he cares about is his music. I was very disappointed of the band that was my favourite for years.
Hope they can gain my trust back with the new album (if they care :D )

bradc

No I haven't seen some kind of monster.

I personally like him mainly for his voice, especially during live performances of Creeping Death and Seek and Destroy. His voice is just so aggressive and makes the song :D

I am a fan from way back, but unlike just about everyone I know, I quite like St. Anger. I think they expressed what a bad mood they were in at the time.

In Some kind of Monster Ulrich and Hetfiled come across like a couple of spoilt kids, Hammet like the middle child who never gets his way. Bob Rock is like the bad uncle. Dodgy, very dodgy.

Rick Rubin is a rock god, Reign in Blood, Blood Sugar Sex Magik are albums that EVERYONE should have, so this should be the shiznit.

load and reload is actually one album on two discs, and the cover was semen and blood between to bits of glass.

as for getting there new album, its money for old rope really as a band they ont interest me anymore. ride the lightning, master of puppets, kill em all and metallica(black album) were the best albums, load and reload had a couple of good songs on them but you couldnt listen to them all the way through
garage inc was pretty poor.
St anger just them trying to get back to thrash metal and it falling flat on its face,
never will do anything as good as the black album

Nevman
04-09-2008, 09:59 AM
Black album was most commercial album they've ever released.
However I like it (the Struggle Within was the song that made me start to listen to heavy metal) it has no 'spirit' as Master..., and Justice... and Ride...

Throbbe

Listening to the 30 second samples there's nothing there that really jumps out at me, although it's probably enough to make me buy this one. Some of the riffs sound like the more commercial Slayer stuff, which isn't a bad thing.

I think the main problem they've got now is that Hetfields voice isn't as powerful as it once was.

Nevman
04-09-2008, 10:58 AM
Hetfield is around 163 years old, what else do you expect Throbbe :D

Saw them at Leeds, they only played 2 new tracks from Death Magnetic, other than that it was all the decent stuff. Mainly off Ride the lightning. There is only 1 thing that can really be said about the metallica, and that is once Cliff Burton died, the band totaly changed their sound.
And justice is my favourite album, although it was slated for poor production, but its by far the best and most technical stuff they've done. How can you not like the black album though, even though it was a bit gay because hammet now had to write his own solo's and thats why there all in Aminor pentotonic.
With load and reload, ok its a bit country and western, but some of the songs like Ronnie really work, but it was the start of Selloutica.
St anger doesnt come in to it, ffs.....tick tick tick.......**** off with that ****e!

I will say though that the new stuff isnt too bad, its not a return to form but its no st anger

I'm pretty sure that Kirk spent time studying with Satriani in the early days.

I can only assume he wasn't paying attention. :D

I'm pretty sure that Kirk spent time studying with Satriani in the early days.
He has.
Hetfield wanted to do the same but when Hammet brought him to Satriani and he's asked Hetfield to show what he can play already, Satriani said to Kirk to teach Hetfield some basics first :D
And that's the true story (apparently)

Master of Puppets was the last true Metallica album. the only one since then I can listen too without getting bored is the Garage Dayz revisited album!

I hope the new is good with a return to form, I seen what i think might have been the new video on Scuzz the other night but wasnt sure as it sounded like any old crap off load / reload....

Death Magnetic, I love what I have so far. I got the download sent to work :(

I have to wait until one of our reps comes in to download it onto a lap top and burn it.

St Anger NEEDED to happen, it was where they were at the time and without it we would never have seen the new stuff.

BTW there is 3 good songs on St Anger, St. Anger it self, frantic and some kind of monster.

Go and buy it Paul,
It is better than St. Anger but not as good as Load / Reload.
I'd put it somewhere between those two albums.
Obviously nothing comparing to Master..., Ride... or ...Justice... but those times won't come back :(
I personally think that it is good album, worth to spend a few quid on it.

First track has a "And justice for all" feel to it and im liking what i've heard so far.
Lars appears to have dicovered how to use his double bass's and the drum sound is MUCH improved from St Anger.
Certainly im enjoying this more than the last 3 "proper" albums......
Now back to the music...

You'd be surprised Pit, so far I think this album IS very good. As posted earlier, not as good as Master..., Ride... or ...Justice... but those times won't come back.

lol was a joke, Dave mustaine always complains about metallica stealing his work.
started listening to whats on youtube, distinctly not impressed, it sounds like they mashed all of there good songs together to make the day that never ends(?)
i got halfway through that song, then clicked on "one" in related and working my way through there good stuff
better than st anger,
old metallica albums rate a firm 9-10 on amazing scale
st anger i rate as a 1, death magnetic is a firm 2

Nevman
15-09-2008, 11:41 PM
I'd say personal preference.
On my 1 - 10 scale.
Kill... - 7.5 (because the songs were covers with Mustain's solos)
Ride... - 9.5 (the album where some guitar solos were actually Dave's)
Master... - 11 (no question about it!)
...And Justice... - 10 (most mature and professional album)
Metallica... - 9 (for commercialism but Holier than Thou, The God that Failed, My Friend of Misery and The Struggle Within were bloody good songs, so high because this album made me to listen to Metallica)
Load - 8 (For the courage of trying something so new)
Reload - 7 (copy of the above but still interesting album)
Garage... - 8.5 (Best album since ...And justice...)
S&M - 7 (Same as Load - for courage and DVD)
St. Anger - 2 (No comment)
Death Magnetic - 5.5 (As said before 1983 - 1988 will never come back...)

Nevman

Inc. which consisted the re-visited on second CD :D
Again, personal preference but 'Die Die My Darling', 'Mercyful Fate', and (IMHO) great version of Nick Cave's 'Loverman'

pitslayer
16-09-2008, 12:35 AM
didnt like garage inc for me
Master-12 (no finer metal album. End of!)
Ride... - 8.5
...And Justice... - 9
Metallica/black album....10 there second finest album
Load - 8. something different, very good album
Reload - 6.5 couple of great songs, but a couple of bad songs
Garage... - 5- couple of good ones, but nothing amazing
S&M - 8, i liked it very good, especially for metal, but i love orchestral work
St. Anger - 1
Death Magnetic - bit early but a 2 atm

That would be the member of Metallica that could play guitar live. :scholar:

Nevman
16-09-2008, 09:17 AM
Member of Metallica? Never heard... I'm sure they would never have such an arsehole in their line-up (well... they have one now - Lars Ulrich but at least he can play drums)
I know that they have tried to give a chance to some poor guitar 'player' who had his arse way above everything else but it didn't work very well :)

Kill Em All was definately the sound of a band finding it's feet. That said, Seek and Destroy is still a live staple, so some of the songs are fairly strong.

As a generalised rant, it seems like bands just don't have the luxury of developing any more, you MUST have a great debut or you get dropped.

Looking at some of Metallicas contempories the first few Sepultura albums are poor (again, with a couple of promising tracks like Troops of Doom), Pantera took several albums to find their sound, Megadeth didn't really reach their full potential until Marty joined. The slightly later bands that came out with huge debut albums like Machine Head and Korn seem to have spent the rest of their careers trying to live up to the promise.

Never heard of Sonata Artica... But having just watched 'Wolf and Raven' on Youtube, I like!

My taste in music varies depending on my mood. When I'm in a Rock/Metal mood, something like Andrew W.K. or The Transplants is usually plucked from the CD rack. Sometimes I like NightWish too; A slice of Symphonic Metal is nice when I'm in a 'Dark' mood.

A few familiar names from my 'metal period'. I'd add Kreator and Extreme Noise Terror to that list too. After that I was more into rave/indie and alternative music but there were a few metal bands that jumped out over the years.

Death Angel - also rans of the Bay Area Thrash scene, but had a few highlights. Best. Powerballad. Ever. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCxEH0UMW2Q)

White Zombie - just me, are all female bass players hot? Contains offensive language (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POuW4L7lcGE)

Meshuggah - never seemed to get much attention. I love watching people try to dance to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOd-T58qHLA)

Love/Hate - Make me want to grow a mullet again. Contains offensive trousers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xolgNdwQX2M)

Blimey, I was just about to put a new thread up about Death Magnetic and when I did a search I found this thread!

Looks like most of this was discussed whilst we were honeymooning ... so missed it.

Anyway, I have just been on Play and eBay and added a few CDs to my collection. Two more Kiss CDs (I now have the full official discography :D) and two more Maiden CDs that I had on tape years ago and never got around to getting on CD ... only two more of them to get (from the non-Dickinson era) and then I have their complete discography too.

Anyway, the point of the post, Metallica.

As you can probably tell, I am "generally" into lighter Metal/Hard Rock ... Kiss, Iron Maiden, Magnum, Def Leppard, WASP etc etc. Metallica is really about as heavy as I get in terms of music that I buy ... although there is some Marilyn Manson on the shelf.

I have got most of their albums ... Ride ... Master ... And Justice ... Black Album ... Reload and St.Anger (plus Garage Inc and S&M). My favourite albums are And Justice and the Black album. I am sure Master of Puppets will be in that list soon but I have not listened to it properly that many times yet. I also like the Reload album but can't get on with St. Anger

So ... I need Load, Kill Em All and Death Magnetic to complete my collection. The question is ... do I buy Load or Death Magnetic next ???

I did listen to Load a few times years ago ... and did like it.

Answers on a postcard ...

Nevman
04-10-2008, 12:29 PM
Load/Reload was a kind of experiment IMHO.
And it went very well. If I were you, I'd listen to Load / Reload for a few months and then go for Death Magnetic.

DM is definitely much better than St. Anger with some influences of Load / Reload and ...And Justice for All... but still not as good as their earlier albums.

Bear in mind that Kill Em All is very Trash Metal album and can't really be listened to as background / ambient music. If you're not into stuff heavier that you've mentioned above, you may not like it. But by all means give it a go :)
