Hi Guys,

I thought I better introduce myself as I have been broadening my horizons from ozvr4 recently. Picked up my 96 Legnum VR4 around 6 months ago, was totally stock, and has since gone about as far through the modding process as one can go on standard turbos and at the last dyno we got 206kw atw. This was almost all done via Dave at RPW as apart of the R & D (http://www.rpw.com.au/shop/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=221&Itemid=40) program.

Am now addicted to the process which is becoming expensive as I am about to go overseas for 10 weeks and will leave my car while I'm away for a turbo upgrade to go ahead and hopefully be finished by the time I get back.

Here's a few pics of my car, full write up can be found here (http://ozvr4.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1028) at ozvr4.

Thars a good amount of power! And the same that I got at ythe hubs last time I rolling roaded. (Although I'm sure there are losses in the tyres that I wouldn't have had!)

/Welcome and keep us informed!

Welcome Madhav. Nice to see you on here! /Welcome

What have RPW got in mind turbo wise then? TD04s? Something more special?

Thanks for the warm welcome, yeah Dave and I were happy with the results, the car is great fun to drive, very fun dragging some of the iconic 'unbeatable' Aussie muscle cars, and beating them in a wagon which they've no idea what it is!!
I've got 3 TD04's sitting in the garage, they all have supposedly less than 20,000 miles on them, but to be safe I planned to get them balanced and if needed rebuilt, however I was quoted $500 Aussie bucks per turbo to do this, bring the total cost to $1300 just for the turbos. May also import 2x 'monster (http://www.boostplanet.com/product1.htm) TD04's' from the USA. Last idea, and u guys may kill me for this, but a lot of the drift guys here in Oz are getting good results from KKR turbos, and the guys who did my cooler piping have been using (and abusing) them for ages in their drift car with nothing but positive results. If I go for the small (http://www.otomoto.com.au/kkr/KKR280.html) ones, they can easily flow 250kw atw, and hit boost a lot earlier than TD04's. Also they are cheaper (with trade prices), and brand new with warranty, although fitting them on a standard manifold may be a challenge as may have to modify manifold or use a adapter plate. Will have to decide soon.

Those KKR ones are journal bearing?

I asked the dude who did my cooler piping, and he has seen a lot of turbo cars, he said they are on par with garretts, and the spool up time was excellent, along with their hp flow rating, so I then googled a bit and it appears they are. He said when he purchased the turbo for his silvia, he told the company that they're gonna be used for drift, and would the warranty still be valid, they said no probs. They had a bad rep in the past, but it seems the company have got their act together and the quality has improved somewhat. I'm probably gonna give it a go.

sounds like a good solution then and at that price we can afford to blow a few up :)

Ha Ha, yeah I agree, even if they last half as long as the garretts, they are a third of the price, so you still end up on top. I just spoke with the dude at Embleton then, and he reckons he could get the KKR 280's to fit with an adapter plate easy enough. They are very compact and small. Am gonna give him the go ahead I think. 250kw atw here we come.

All this talk of new turbos and 250kW at the wheels is quite exciting and, if the truth be told, I am somewhat jealous :p :)

I am however wondering what the limits of the standard drive system are and if they can handle the extra power?

Well this is a debate right now, in terms of engine internals, some say stop at 250kw, others say go to 300kw atw with good tuning and no detonation and it should be fine? Tuning seems to be very important though, that's why I'm not taking any chances and am going with a full Haltech E11 ecu and handing the tuning over to Dave at RPW who specializes in Mitsubishi turbos. Auto Trans is another story, appears to be a bit of a gamble, will find out soon enough, and if all else fails (which I sincerely hope it doesn't) I'll convert to manual. The rest of the drivetrain is supposed to be pretty strong, based on the evo tech.
