I don't touch Sainsburys.

V-Power is a safe bet and often amongst the cheapest of the supers. It is often higly placed in independant tests as the most powerful/cleanest etc....

I personally get good results from Tesco 99 too.

The cars ECU detects knock from the engine (Google engine knock for a decent explanation!) and pulls the timing and thus the power. This hurts fuel economy too. 95 RON petrol will cause a small amount of knock and the ECU to take action - how much depends on the fuel and the car but I only ever use 95 as a get me home jobby. The car is designed for 100 octane fuel so even super is sometimes not good enough!

Tesco 99 unleaded for me too, and no issues with it.
Occasionally use Shell V-Power and that seeems fine as well.

Usually Tesco 99, have had the odd tank or two of Shell V-Power and BP Ultimate. No probs to report!

Same here. I've logged runs in EvoScan and at high boost (0.9bar) it doesn't knock on Tesco 99 or Vpower. :)

I know but Kieran is saying that he's not getting any knock at all which I'd like him to expand on a little if he can ;)

In the UK V-Power is 98.

95 is normal fuel - we don't get a lower octane than that.

Bah, and I fall into the trap of posting something untrue by virtue of not specifying my parameters! /pan /pan

To clarify - I should say that on WOT in any gear there's no knock detected using either V-Power or Tesco 99 (Both 99RON). Very occasionally there's a knock count of 1 on part throttle at low RPM/load, but to give you some indication, on a log of a 45 minute drive to work, this happened twice, and both times it was under light load conditions.

I read somewhere over the week-end that older Japanese engined cars should not be run on petrol with over 3% Ethanol content. Is this correct?

And does not Tesco 99 contain 5% Ethanol?

The jury seems to be out on this as I have read conflicting information regarding the use of petrol with an ethanol content. I know of one CVR-4 member who has used an ethanol blend in their ST-R and the results were not inspiring.

That said, I plan to revert my car to standard boost - fill it with one tank and monitor the knock count.

ethanol is a totally different ball game! stick with the Tesco Super 99. All will be okay. I have just gone back to TEsco 99 and am gonna log a run at the weekend once enoughs run through from mu last tank of V Power. I experience knock count of 3 under partial load with V power.

I don't think you will be able to "feel" it knocking, unless you maybe put in some really bad petrol. When the ECU detects knock, it retards the timing and dumps more fuel into the combustion chamber.

Essentially you will experience less power and your fuel consumption will increase but that's about it.

Someone else will be able to confirm or correct me on this :)

you will never feel knock until its waaaaaay too late! Yes the ECU will pull itself back to acomodate the crap fuel. Knock up to 5 is common and nothing to worry about, its when Knock gets well into the double figures its worry time
