No it is not!

i think from 6 it was changed to a SAYC diff (S=Super) in the EVO's.

there have been some people on here that have put SAYC diff in a leggy but it is not a straight forward swap. search on SAYC or evo 8 diff.

not sure about 4 and 5, but i don't think they are direct replacements either.

some of the other guys on here will have a more definate answer for you.

IIRC it was from 7 onwards that S-AYC appeared...

how do you kow it is knackered?

mine sounded knackered, and it turned out to be just a £20 presure switch change that need to be changed. also fluids changing makes a big difference.

try Zedy1 (Mo) for parts, also called galent spares.

you might try to put a WTB in the parts sale/buy section of the forum.

the symptoms are code 82(electrical pump) and a hurrendous clunk every 45-50 degrees of rotation.the clunk is very severe,it shudders the whole car at 1kph!

yeh not sure about that, it doesn't sound good. that was not what i experienced. (apart from the error code).

mine was a horrid grinding sound when realy hard cornering, the fluid change sorted that, then there was the RED AYC light on the dash with i think error code 82 which was the pressure switch, which actully means the hydrolic fluid pressure is a bit low (pump isn't producing the pressure, or the pressure switch is faulty) and is not moving the acuaters in the diff that shift the chuch packs in the diff, which transfers the torque.

so it might not be so bad.

i am no expert but i fix mine for about £50 including fluids.

Where are you based in Ireland? Surely any Rally prep places will have spares of these and/or know their way round to service them? EVO specific rally prep shop is what your after.

Just for the record, because everyone has been wrong so far :)

All EVO diffs have slightly different cases. You will need to put some spacers to be able to fill the diff easily.

EVO 4 have the same ratio as ours. EVO 5/6/7 have a slightly different ratio, they are 3.307:1 43/13 whereas EVO 4 and VR-4 are 3.323 53/16. EVO 4/5/6 all have the same transfer case, so the slight ratio change didn't worry mitsi.

The 8/9 have S-AYC but it is still the 3.307 ratio. All will fit into a VR-4

how wrong can i be!

cheers brad, for the info i seem to remeber you looking into thisin depth.

well i was sort of right they are not the same and not direct drop in replacements with out spacers. well as right as you can be in a completely wrong sort of a way! Sorry.

see ask the question and some will come up with a difinitive answer.

Well getting it wrong and being corrected is part of the fun on here...

The question was, is our (vr-4) diff the same as in E4-9

The answer is no as E8-9 have S-AYC

An S-AYC diff is not the same as our AYC diff

The casings, ratios and other variations are an extra part of the question as S-AYC diffs and others may have, as stated, different casings, ratios and whatever....
