View Full Version : New Tyres - Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3

My current tyres have aged significantly, although they are not worn. I have cracking in thread and it is "shiny" in places. (Maybe why I have a problem with traction control speed)

I am considering replacing them with one of the following

Yokohama A520
Bridgestone Potenza Grid 3
Toyo Proxes T1-S

and the dealer recommended Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 (http://www.goodyear.co.nz/tyres.asp?id=2) for NZ$1100 for a set of 4

Not going to knock the Goodyears - they are exactly what I have on mine and well happy with them ;)

Yoko AVS if you can them,

Don't have a VR4, just a stock V6-24v, but I invested in a pair of F1s for the front and they are terrific! The rears are just lasting for ages (25k and still nowhere near needing replacement), but will have F1s there too.

Much better than the rubbishy Dunlop Sport 2000s or whatever Mitsi put on them in the UK.

However - and I don't know if this is a characteristic of all performance/directional tyres - they do tend to tramline at lower speeds - and the pressure's right in them.

They certainly look the business too!

215/45/ZR17s on mine and they cost me £225 for 2, incl balance and valves.

Momentary thread hijack - sorry! What's 'tramlining' when referred to tyres/handling? To a simple thicky like me, it sounds like the car wants to go in a straight line. So does it mean that you have to force the car round the corner 'cause the steering wheel fights you back to centre?

lorriman
31-03-2004, 01:55 PM
It's like when you drive in a rut in the road, especially when they've just stripped the blacktop off to resurface.

It isn't anything you have to fight as such and definitely doesn't cause a problem, it's just as if it wants to go in a straight line.

Looking at the link to the Goodyear site in the first posting it does refer to "improved on-centre steering feel" Maybe that's what I get.

Who knows?

I'm on my second set of Toyo Proxes T1-Ss and happy with them. My wife had Goodyear Eagle F1-GSD3s on her last car and they were fine too. I prefer the tread pattern of the Toyos, but that's purely personal preference :)

I've had the Toyos, they were OK, and had Bridgestone PP03's - avoid !

Oh, and the F1s as well, they were OK too.

Anyone with questions on tyre choice, ask the man with the miles!! ;)

Do you get a discount, PJ?

As a new owner and the fact that I need two new tyres I've done quite a bit of investigating and it seems to me that, overall, the Eagle F1 GS-D3 is the best buy.

Slightly more expensive than some mentioned here but the data suggests they will last longer. Performance in the wet (and dry) is superior to all others both accelerating and braking.

I'm sure you can all get hold of the data but I have it available for the following tyres if anyone wants it.

Eagle F1 GS-D3
Yokohama AVS Sport
Pirelli 6000
Toyo Proxes T1-S

Pete,

I just noticed the V6 badge above your side repeaters. Were they standard or from another marque? If so, which? I want em lol !! (Mine doesn't have them if they are standard)

Thanks,

They are standard on the pre-facelift 8G VR4 as far as I know, so just pop along to your dealer and get some ;)

They are OZ Racing Super Leggera's - 17"

I got them from Wheelbase in Oldham by mail order - got them with the Goodyears fitted to them and delivered to the door ;)

I have 4 Goodyear Eagles [not F1s] on my 6G, and the grip is noticeably better than the previous tyres. I'd definitely go for them again.

I've also had Firestones before [on my previous car] and these were good also :)

Vickys 206 GTi has goodyears (Not sure if they are F1, but the tread pattern looks the same.) Not necessarily relevant to the VR4 though.

Pete,

Thanks ......... I *THINK* mine is a pre-facelift model (the 'old' front dam) but here again I have something missing then (the V6 badges and the strut bar).

Now for the silly question ...... you say 8G VR4 ..... is mine 8G ??? Ahem! sorry but I'm not sure what these numbers denote - 6G, 8G etc.

Thanks pal,

Richard

The 8G stands for 8th generation, and yes yours is an 8th generation.

Maybe they arn't standard badges then, but no problem getting them from Mitsy - or another version here at Funky Product: http://www.funkyproduct.co.uk/item.php?carNumber=24&carMake=Galant&catTypeNumber=2&catType=Exterior&subcatType=Emblems,%20Badges%20and%20Stickers&subcatTypeNumber=55

Thanks for the vote of confidence about the F1 GS-D3. In shopping around, I can get them for about NZ$260 each. The Toyos are about NZ$280.

I will get the Goodyears as they are good. My last car had Goodyears F1 too, though not GS-D3s.

BraindG saw my current tyres too, and he agreed they need to go. They have hundreds of short hairline cracks in the grooves in the tread.

Next Week, after Easter, the Goodyears go on.

Funny, it's not really your car until, you've put on a new set of tyres. Anyone else find that ?

Hope I'm not too late KiwiTT but since one of my previous posts I believe I've found a *better* tyre which I'm personally going to get (unless anyone has bad reports).
It's still a Goodyear tyre - Eagle Ventura. According to the official independent tests it beats the Eagle F1 GS D3 by a fair margin AND seemingly wears better as well.
You may care to check it out if you haven't already purchased. ( I have the tech data comparisons if you want them)
BTW ....... congrats on your exalted status to the astral plains of the forum Gods :D

Hes more than that, hes clubvr4 NZ :)

regarding his tyres, because of the speed restrictions etc in japan, i was told that most of the performance cars are not kitted out with the correct tyres, thus when you buy an import car from japan, you should swap tyres first..

Thanks Physician:

I had a look at the Goodyear Eagle Venturas and I found out the following;

1) Not available in New Zealand :|
2) Only go up to 16" :|

Also, the Ventura is middle of the range.

The F-1 GS-D3 is the Top of the Performance Range. I don't think this will be a bad choice.

I'll do a review on them later.

Still haven't got them on yet. I showed those hairline cracks in my tread to a "car expert", a former car-dealer franchise general manager and a member family (i.e. no axe to grind, and objective), and he said not to worry about those. Only worry if they are in the sidewalls. This has caused me to delay my decision a bit further.

I have been reading a comparision between three performance cars "Ferrari 360 Stradale, Porsche 911 GT3, BMW M3 CSL" and it said that the reason that the GT3 can be so good, is the level of grip now available on new type of tyres.

As my tyres are over 5 years old in design, if not in actual age, it may pay to upgrade, if I want better grip.

Hmmmm ... decisions, decisions ... I've been here before. Sorry Guys. I will probably put them on in Late May/early June now.

Are you getting the standard size fitted (205/55-16)? I looked at the tyre size calculator and I think I will get the 225/50-16 which is practically the same radius. Quoted around $250 each from a Goodyear dealer. Current ones (Dunlops?) getting a bit low...

I am getting 225/45 ZR17's for around $260 each. A bargain considering how well they perform in a half dozen independent tests, especially in the "WET" Auckland.

Spirit

Blimey, for once your price isn't massively cheaper than here in the UK.

I will be getting some new F1's next month (225/45/17 too) and I am getting them supplied and fitted for £366 all in ;)

They are on now. Currently @ 32 PSI, which is a little low for me. However, they are quieter than my old ones.

Cost $NZ1040 including GST (Sales Tax) with Wheel Alignment.

Bring on the "Rain" :evil2:

Boy did it rain last night. However, no worries here, I felt like the car was always in contact with the road.

I can only say this ... if you are looking for a safe tyre in the WET, get these. And it almost half the price of competitors. i.e. Bridgestone S-03 PP, Pirelli P Zero's and Michellin Pilot Sports.

This is great timing. I have just bought a 2000 VR4. It is NZ new so has reasonable tyres but not performance tyres so they have to go.

I buy my tyres from Frank Allan Tyres in Albany so I will ask them for pricing on the Goodyears.

I have currently have 16" wheels but this will be changed at the same time I get new tyres for 17".

Keep us updated on the road testing of these new tyres.

Just looking at Goodyear GS-D3's for my next set. I'm convinced enough by everyone's excellent feedback to give them a go.

I've got worn Yokohama AVS Sports on at the moment, but a new set & fitting of 4 235/40/18 of these is about £200 more expensive than the F1's, plus the Yokos have proved rather scary in the rain.....mind you, that's probably a combination of car + me. :dozey:

:( s'Not fair! Everywhere I seem to look a set of 4 18's are about £150-200 more than 17s. That's an expensive extra inch I have....

Cheapest I've found....(inc fitting):

http://www.etyres.co.uk/about_tyres.htm

Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 235/40/18/Z: £141.62 each (£596.12), + wheel balancing (£619.60), Free mobile fitting.

Anyone had any experience of these guys? I'm slightly wary about these kind of places, but very tempted by the price and convenience factors.

Try here mate: www.mytyres.co.uk

They list them at £121.30 each (£485.20 for 4) and that includes VAT and delivery in the UK ! Then just get them fitted and I'm sure you can get that done fairly cheap - I paid £38 at my local ATS to swap over a set recently and that included fitting/valves/balancing - so I make that around £525 altogether ;)

Hi

Just thought I'd say I've been looking at a new set of tyres for my EVO8 Enkies 235/45/17s if I remember correctly. Best price if anyone else is looking also I found is just under £350 from www.valuetyres.co.uk and www.event-tyres.co.uk

Probably will buy them a couple of 100 miles before the ring trip (Easter), get em bedded in driving over there and off I pop.

Anyone else found any better value than I have?

I fitted a set of Vredestein Ultrac tyres to mine about this time last year.

They are stunning to look at in profile and the tread is like something from a Batmobile.

As you'd expect from Vredestein the wet weather grip is fabulous!

They've done about 15K and there's still 4-5mm left, so longevitiy isn't a problem.

The only downside as I see it is they cost me £110 each fitted and you might have difficulty finding a supplier.

You'd probably be able to get Sportracs for yours as I think 235/17s are available and they are supposed to be even better than the Ultrac, though probably more expensive too.

If you were looking for 19s then i would guess there would be a pretty big differece in price.. KiwiTT was looking at standard 205-55r16s, which is bound to be cheaper than 19s because they are more common, just how much cheaper though i dont know
