can anyone tell me if standard suspension spring's from a 1998+ V6 will fit a gls,
A guy has asked me but i'm not sure he has asked if it will make any diff to the height of his galant.

I'd imagine they'll fit, but bear in mind the weight difference between the 2.0 and the 2.5 V6 might mean him driving round looking at too much sky !

can anyone with a V6 with standard spring's mesure from the center of there wheel to the center of the wheel arch on both front and rear? i had thought about the weight diffrence but he say's the garage supplying them said
"it'll sit level as it's a full set of V6 spring's" but i'm not to sure? if anyone can help, tonight would be great as he has to have them replaced before saturday..

According to my old brochures, the ride height of the V6-24 and the GLS are the same. Ground clearance is quoted at 150mm from the bottom lip of the front bumper to the floor.

As has already been said, I think the problem may be the spring rates... The V6 is about 150-200 kilos heavier at the front.

And, now I've put my brain in gear :$...

If a full set of V6 springs are being fitted to a GLS, then the only difference re: spring rates will be a slightly firmer ride I think... The springs will be wound to take the weight of the V6, so they'll be slightly more resistant to compressing because the GLS engine and drivetrain will not load them as heavily...

I think?!?!?!! :dozey: :shifty: :rolleyes5

This is well over my head, but surely the extra weight of a V6 is on the front wheels, so the rears will not be much different? So therefore the V6 springs on a GLS will offer a bigger change on the front than the rear?

KIERAN (to the rescue again) top man :cool1:
so-would you recon the full set fitted would help keep it sitting proper but maybe firmer?

:headsc: you may have a fair point......
KIERAN have you any way of finding-out the part number's for the rear spring's for both car's?

Hang on there.... :|

Just looked at the UK service manual I've got here and the springs are physically different.... :(

Gimme a moment to read and digest what I'm looking at......

Anyway, I'll have some sort of answer in a moment...

Ian, is your friend's GLS a manual or an automatic?

Big Ian

it's a manual.

Here's the information I have.

Looking at the service manuals, it seems that the suspension didn't change much throughout the Galant's life, even with the introduction of the Sport models, etc. The only differences are the 2000cc M/T, which has a slightly different spring height. The rears seem the same accross all models.

The only other thing to watch for is if the car has been fitted with high ground clearance suspension, or self-levelling suspension.

All measurements are in mm, and are laid out as follows:
Wire Diameter X Average Diameter X Free Length

Fronts:

All models appear to of the same design and construction, with minor changes in spring diameter, as seen below.

Saloon
2000cc with Manual transmission: 12 x 70-110 x 366
All other saloons, inc. 2000cc with Auto: 12 x 70-110 x 374

Estate
2000cc with either transmission: 12 x 70-110 x 366
All other versions: 12 x 70-110 x 374

Rears:

The coils at the rear did change if the car had self-levelling or high clearance suspension fitted, but I doubt you'll have to worry about this.

Saloon
Standard:9 x 62-102 x 397
Heavy duty: 9 x 94-102 x 330
Self-Leveling: 9-10 x 63-103 x 386

Estate
Standard: 9-10 x 63-103 x 405
Heavy duty: 10 x 95-103 x 321
Self-Leveling: 10-11 x 64-104 x 383

does this mean the V6 SPRING'S ARE 8mm LONGER? or is this just all the 2000cc model's

Kieran

That would appear to be the case, yes :)

Big Ian

not much in it !! i wonder if you would notice the diffrence or not?

Big Ian

what do you think should i tell him to get them or not? :headsc:

Kieran

As far as I can tell, the only difference is the 8mm length. Not really enough to worry about.

Put it this way, if it were me, i'd have a go with them and see what happened. :)

:thumb1: thank's for all the info kieran :thumb1:
i think i would just go ahead aswell, and it's not as though he care's to much for his galant it's just a work-horse to him.in saying that! it's a good advert as it's done over 185,000 mile's,he dosn't service it he only change's the oil every once an a while..
it failed it's mot with 2 broken spring's and he need's it legal for the weekend ,hence the new spring's,and the only one's he can get before next week are V6 item's.
thank's again...... :D

Big Ian

well he has had them fitted and is now on his way to inverness,i don't know how it look's as ive not seen the car,but on the phone he recon's it is level..and a lot harder(mind you his had done a fair few mile's) also the garage have only taken half the cash for them till he return's on tuesday . he said the garage are happy with the level but will check it again next week once everything has settle'd down..
i'll let you know more once ive seen it.....

Japmetal

If the difference is 8mm, you probably wouldnt spot it; Maybe the car won't look quite right & you can't figure why, but it wont exactly be looking like it's about to lift off into outer space !

As for the sring details above, the 2000cc Auto 'box will be the only one on the longer springs, since the auto box weighs a fiar bit more & probably needs the extra pre-load tension of the V6 springs

:$ more help please!!!
my mate phoned the garage to say he was not happy with the spring's they have said that they have another set in stock, these are for an e52 and e55 model galant, can anyone (kieran) tell me if these fit a 1998 manuel GLS ?
i thought they may be for an early 1990 galant......

if these are no good then the garage will order the proper one's.

Kieran
03-04-2004, 10:38 AM
God no! Don't fit them!

The model codes e52 and e55 refer to the 7G galant... the e52 is the 1.8 GLS version, so they'll be too soft. The e55 is the 2.0 V6 or the 2.5 V6 AWD AWS, so they'll be too hard. Anyway, I think the front suspension design is completely different.

The 8th Gen 2.0 GLS is model code EA2A, or EA2W if it's an estate.

EA3A/EA3W is the GDI version

EA5A/EA5W is the V6 version.

So get a set of springs for a 1997-on Galant EA2A/W and you'll be ok. :)
