View Full Version : Which Coilovers?

I realise this topic has been done to death but I was wondering what the general consensus on lowering the Leggy on coilovers is.

The tein superwagon kit seems to be fairly popular.

I would like to try and keep the ride reasonably comfortable and avoid any rubbing problems.

Is the kit easy enough to do as a homer or is it better to take it to a garage? I lowered my old colt on springs myself a few years back but it was hard work!

Thanks!

Andy

I would go with the teins as I have regretted fitting the diayama setup I have. It isn't a difficult job to do but if your worried you can always drop in by me to have it fitted

That's a very nice offer Peter! Do you run a garage or are you just an enthusiast?

Just an enthusiast with plenty of tools and a reasonable amount of experience

Ahh great! Well, I may well take you up on your generous offer, just in case I get things badly wrong. Not sure when I will order the kit, I suppose it depends whether the side of me that thinks I should be sensible and repay some debt first or the one that can't wait to see how lovely the car will look when its low wins out.

Are the super 'wagon' ones the ones to go for? Or the super 'street' or whatever? How does the range go in order of preference?

The Super Wagons are the entry level Teins as such. I have a set of those and the ride is still really comfy. The Super Streets are more of a performance setup and are harder but with more adjustability.

I have a D2 coilover kit (www.d2racingsport.com).

I own the "Street" setup which is height adjustable (up to 100mm lowering!!!) and the dampers can be adjusted in 36-ways (comfortable to ass-kicking-hard).

You can adjust the ride height without changing the spring preload (from OE height to submarine-low). Just see my car gallery. :smoking: ...and there are still 3cm left for an additional lowering :dizzy2:

Btw, D2 coilover = KSport coilover! Also Tein, Cusco and Daiyama are going the same way on coilover kits.

hope that helps

What about this cusco kit in comparison with the tein one?

I bought some second hand basic Tein suspension from a fellow club VR4 member and have to agree they are very good! Mine now looks very mean lowered and I haven't sacrificed any comfort at all really. I would recommend them highly!

Sooo, if I was to do the whole coilovers thing would it put out the camber and alignment of the wheels? And is this something that can be dealt with cheaply and effectively? I don't fancy going through lots of tires like I did on the old car due to this. Weighing up buying coilovers this week, the moneys there but I am not sure if it might be better spent paying off some of my debt.....

Having had tein springs and Bilstein shock absobers, car sits lower and the rear wheel camber seems to have been affected...

And as rear camber cannot be adjusted, I have to be prepared for consequences - prob more tyre wear on rear tyres...

peter thomson

You can adjust the rear camber with washers and longer bolts. Gly has a write up in the articles

Will have to get 'my man' to check the article - copy article to a word document for reference...

Checked article

To begin with - these do not work:

http://thegspot.orcon.net.nz/Camber-Guide/BS.JPG

And question from article about how much camber obtained...

If I have +2.5 degrees...

Will this method alow it to be adjusted to +1.5 or +1.0...?

bradc

Yes, it will decrease the amount of camber the car has. around 1.0 to 1.5 is what you want.

Nope not standard. If you've got'em already they are aftermarket.

Hey you Gurus!

Oh please tell if there is a coilover kit available with TÜV-approval...
Tein suspension would be great but local MOT (in Finland I mean) will not approve aftermarket suspension if they cannot find any approval A4 about them, that really sucks...

I think that Bilstein made (at some point) normal shocks to Legnum, I've seen pics somewhere... Is there any point if I would buy Tein springs and put those to normal shocks?

bradc
11-06-2009, 08:51 PM
You can buy Bilstein shocks designed for lowered legnums and yse they can be used with any lowering springs

Hey Joikale!

Go for a K-Sport coilover kit. This kit is available for your car and has a german TÜV approval. ;)

You will need the KSG-M12 coilover kit for 1145,- EUR. It's the same system like my D2 Racingsport, only an other color and name. If you need further information go to www.d2racingsport.com (shock absorbers / street)

www.k-sport-germany.com
and here the application list: www.k-sport-germany.com/fahrwerk_list.html

cheers
Stefan

I think I'll go with the D2 'cos those are about 700-800€ per whole set.
I just found out that I will not need tüv-approval at all...
