Depends on whether you want more high rpm power or low to mid RPM power.
By Advancing or Retarding the opening times of the Inlet and exhaust valves you can cram more air/fuel into the cylinder giving your more bang per buck..

Advancing the Cam for low/mid RPM power increase will allow the inlet valve to open before all of the exhaust gasses have exited from the cylinder. This can use the vacuum effect of the exhaust gasses exiting the cylinder to suck more air fuel into the cylinder making for more power per stroke.. Advance it to far though and you will not allow sufficient time for all of the exhaust gasses to exit and therefore will have spent gasses mixed in with the new air/fuel which would be detrimental to power and may cause knock/Det..



Retarding the Cam timing will increase the HIGH RPM power of the car.. But will decrease the power at low/mid RPM..

So it depends what your after ?

Advance for more grunt round town ? Or Retard if you are Drag or Racing at high RPM ?
