Sourcing pistons & rods and need to know whether VR4 pistons are flat top or domed? If it's not asking too much a picture would be handy.

Thanks for that. Supplier was surprised that the one he had listed was a flat top. Makes it $100 cheaper for the set.

how much are they going to cost you and are they upgraded pistons?

LOL!

I think this is exactly what I expect when I crack my engine open! Do you know which cylinder it was Pete?

Did post reply this morning, but appears to have gone into the abyss.
Yes the pistons are uprated and estimated cost including postage, duty & VAT £550. Price includes rings & pins.
Half serious about this at moment. Decide early next week. With delivery for std items being upto 3 weeks (possibly more judging by delivery of cam covers) I will be looking at £1200+ for parts & labour on top, when engine eventually needs rebuilding.
If I source forged parts now then when/if time comes car will be off road for shorter period.
With forged rods being quoted upto 8 weeks & pistons 2-3 weeks I'd probably not have the patience to wait possibly 3 months to get car back on road & would settle for std items to quicken rebuild.
If at a later date I want more power then rebuild with std items will be money down drain if internals can't cope & I'm back to 3 month scenario.
If parts were readily available I wouldn't bother going down this road but 3 months without car & I'd lose interest.

By the way PJ thanks for pic. Was sure you'd posted it before but couldn't find it!!!

Where are you sourcing your pistons and rods from? Project VX needs some!!might be worth a call to www.powerengineering.co.uk
I know they are mainly EVO stuff, but you never know !!!, they may be able to help.

I thought that, on this site, divulging suppliers had become a matter of secrecy & info would only be shared through PM's.
I mention this as the thread did disappoint me. I always saw Club Vr4 as somewhere where ideas/suppliers were shared, people were encouraged to use certain suppliers (e.g Woodford Garage, thorough explanations on setting up boost controllers & threads debating pros/cons of possible upgrades ).
Now that's off my chest I'll reveal all.

Ross for the pistons & Oliver for the rods. A couple of threads in the past have referred to threads involving Motec Mick of Xtreme on MLR. He indicated that he was having forged internals made up for a customer using the same suppliers they use on the Evo. Gave each supplier a call referring to pistons/rods that they had previously made for the 6A13TT & both suppliers still had records.
Oilver suggested that I should contact CO-ORD as with their discount they should be able to beat the factory (retail) price (on the expensive side at $270 a rod). They weren't much help. I will be ringing them back up trying to negotiate a trade discount. Otherwise it might be a case of ordering a std rod & posting to possibly Eagle rods for a cheaper build. Only concern is that with rods it might not be best to go the cheapest route.
Anyway, I've made my point

Hi Borgan - Call me thick, but I don't understand the above. Can you put it a bit simpler for me?

Hi Borgan

I think I understand what you mean, but some of the posts relating to "maybe you should join" or "it's in the member's section" has been put as an encouragement for people to join as full members such as yourself.

We have over 900 registered users, but I would say around 60 - 80 are regulars and the vast majority of the rest have never even posted. Whilst some will not even have a VR4, there are those who are looking for a free ride when it comes to info etc. Since we made the decision to introduce membership last year, I see it as part of my duties as a moderator (and indeed all FULL members) to encourage this as the more paying members we have the more we can do as a club, and if we don't then many paying members will not bother to renew their membership in November.

Pete

The only reason I have not divulged info about Rods and Pistons is that I am not yet in receipt of enough details to make divulging suppliers worthwhile! :|

I have posted the info before, and can remember it was a middle one, back row I think.

I'd be interested if yours is similar because my car was undriveable, and had no boost. But I wasn't with the car when it was taken apart.

I was told that the piston was the cause - nothing to do with the turbo's that had just been worked on. Hence work needed to fix ( mucho £) was not under guarantee. Maybe I'm too suspicious.

On the subject of suppliers, my car has been through many 'experts' hands, some of them pretty well known. These are the ones I'd be happy to recommend to Club VR4 members without any reservations.

As you can see its a very short list.

However I am working with a company who thinks they can fix my AYC replacing my AYC pump for a pretty good price, and if they succeed I will let any interested members know.

On the subject of membership I still haven't received anything.

Mental note to myself - must post more so that people get used to my tongue in cheek humour

Having reviewed my earlier post I can see why there might be confusion. At the time of writing I thought long & hard to not make the post offensive :lipsrseal. I thought that sharing my efforts would make this clear. I have no problems with anyone on this forum. I seek help & advice & receive back useful info. When I feel I can help I offer assistance.

Dave asking for the name of the suppliers made me chuckle. The posts made on a previous thread relating to internals were of a humourous nature and perhaps the post should have been made there or maybe added a :p or a :D .

Wirdy, if you view the "vx engine internals" thread in "vr4 chat" it may help you understand.

By the way I am fully paid up member :D .

Mental note to myself - Perhaps post less so as to not offend

P.S In my post that got lost in the site upgrade I did mention that , should I buy the internals, if I hadn't yet used them I would consider letting another member use them on the understanding that replacements were ordered from the same suppliers.

No offence taken! Just wanted to clarify the situation! Post more, its always the best option! Especially if you have lots of mods, all experiences shared are appreciated! Some may get moved to the members area though to lure potential members to keep the club running!!! :D Still waiting for a reply from my potential supplier of forged goodies :shifty:

Has anyone managed to source any pistons and rods .. I am in talk with a company in the states who say they can custom make anything we want and upto what spec we want .. ( i said upto 750bhp and they said not a problem ) I need to know some exact dimensions and spec so as just to get a quote .. They say they will need a run of 40 of the same item to reduce the costs considerebly and it then again reduces if the run exceeds 100 .. Is anyone interested ..

Just need a bit of info first to get some sort of quote ..

I have 12 pistons and rods that can be sent, however

3 pistons are chipped
1 piston is in 1000000000 pieces
1 rod is in 2 pieces

Dave can you bring a rod, piston and crank to Japfest with you? I need a sample to give to Farndon Engineering and may also have a supplier for the pistons.

Cheers

They only specialise in pistons (and they meke them for drag cars too) don't think they do rods ,sorry i think i forgot to mention that .. But i could be wrong and if they don't i'm sure they know someone who does ..
