Just received this email from the MD of Hosting Unlimited:

"At 1.05pm we began experiencing issues with our Core routers. We identified that the cause was a 400% increase in packets per second in to our network.
The problem was a DDoS attack against our network, this was malicious. We have now identified the problem and removed the site that this attack was aimed at. We are working closely with the data centre to put steps in place to prevent any further re-occurrences.

I would like to personally offer my sincere apologies for any inconvenience this has caused."

We are working closely with the data centre to put steps in place to prevent any further re-occurrences.

This suggests they themselves use someone elses colocation facilities.

Sucks to be them. Doesn't say much for their router configs, though: DDoS attacks aren't that difficult to identify and avoid if you're a Service provider.

Router configs to not respond to malformed packets, limited retransmissions, non-Ack etc...it's all there.
Couple that with a decent operations centre, and this should have been anticipated and stepped on within minutes, not hours, even more so if they are co-located!

Agree with Steve a decent company would have sorted this out quickly

A firewall does help lol
