Hi,
Coming home tonight i pulled away quite hard, changed from 1st to 2nd, went for 3rd and its jammed!!
I had to limp home in second, riding the clutch to pull away.
The car is now jammed in second gear, the gearstick wont move out of 2nd.
Ive had the air filters off and moved around the gear selectors outside the gearbox but nothing, Ive been in under the gearstick and all seems fine, The clutch still works fine,I think i must have broken or jammed something inside the gearbox. ANY IDEAS! 1996 VR4 Manual

Normally the issue is a torn rubber on the gearbox end of the cable. The outer part of the cable fits in a U shaped bracket that is mounted on rubbers. These rubbers fail and the outer cable moves excessively, so the inner doesn't move the selector arm properly.

It's quite a common failure.

Wheres Brad?

Yep, what Nick said. The gearbox will be fine, you will just need to repair or replace the gear selector cables. 30 minute job :)

I thought that manual transmissions were bullet proof? /STP

Nah,it's a manual,so brad won't be making his auto/tip comments..:p

Yes but the actuators have failed!

Anything you can fix with cable ties doesn't count as a mechanical failure :P (assuming this is the actual problem)

You know what they say about assumption Kenneth ;)

How exactly? We achieve MUCH better launches than manuals and we have a higher (de-restricted) top speed because of our superior gear ratios :)

neither is true

I've got an EVO 7 gearset in my car with a slightly longer 5th gear so 70mph is about 2800rpm rather than the stock 3000rpm. The autos are 2500rpm at 70mph btw.

The gearbox felt just like mine, no surprise there considering they are the still the same box, perhaps a bit notchier but it always felt like it would find the gear and it had a nice short throw. I didn't see an SST one there, but the guy told me one will be there next week if I'd like to drive it. The gearing on the 5 speed is quite short, even compared to a manual VR-4. At 6000rpm the speeds in each gear are 55, 81, 109, 144, 207, whereas a VR-4 is 52, 83, 124, 169, 228 <- this is a manual.

Nahh I can view them fine, I just didn't have Quicktime installed

It still gets there pretty quickly, if you had more road you'd get to 165mph or so I guess. Ryan here: Richard has an auto AND 165MPH = 264km/h

I like my auto heaps, I always drive it in tiptronic mode as well, and I do like having manual levels of gear control, but without a clutch!

Both cars will run out of puff before they hit the rev limiter though, unless they are heavily modifed and then you'll run to 7500rpm or more if heavily modified and then it isn't an issue either :)

As for that last quote, you must have done a lot of digging, it must have been about 4 years ago!

Firstly: You haven't disproved my assertion that a de-limited auto is faster than a de-limited manual. Which, incidentally, is what i alluded to in the first place... the quotes I have listed above substantiate this.

Secondly:

If you have the courage of your convictions, surely you would have known that this quote would have been dredged up from the woodwork regardless? :) My how you have changed your tune over the last ... what... four years? :D

Assuming you had 500hp and a 7000rpm rev limit, then yes a manual would stop at 266kmh, and an auto would go to 310kmh, assuming the auto hadn't blown up during acceleration. At 300hp though, the two cars would get to about the same speed, the manual would just get there a lot faster.

4 years is a long time!

Right - so now that I know YOU know autos are capable of high speed, I'll just add this little bit of proof that shows that they are capable of handling a LOT of power... Which, incidentally... is a *LITTLE* bit more than you've made :)

Of course! He's heavily modded his car, Madhav has added injectors and upgraded his turbos (producing even MOAR power)... but... Guess what? It' still an AUTO :D

4 years is a long time!

Maybe you should get an auto? *Shrugs* /juggle

You do realise Madhav's car has been off the road for 2 months because the gearbox is in about 5 times as many pieces as what Mitsi ever put into the gearbox?

Top work chaps, The rubbers had failed and would not move the selector arm properly. £45 for replacement parts, 15 days from Japan, 45mins to replace.
Very happy.
Thanks for your help

Not a problem :)

Just ignore our slightly off topic discussion, you've got the right sort of gearbox :D
