I drove down to Canberra on Sunday and couldn't believe there were kangaroos all over the place in the city. They were in front of office blocks, in parks, in front of clubs and just everywhere.
They were even using the pedestrian crossing.

:smitten: I nearly had a kitten, had to re-read that....... diff read as something different the first time....... was nearly going to say porntube as they don't allow that on youtube......:smitten:

Speaking of diff's hows it bedding in Paul??? Obviously ok if your on your way out to eastern creek

VR-04-TT
09-06-2009, 01:00 PM
Hahhaha! Maybe diff is code? ;)

Yeah it's awesome. The car has never been better. I swear the AYC is more 'active' now, I'm guessing the old diff had been shearing itself to bits since I got it.

Oh and looks like I've scored a MH7202 ecu ;)

I'll be coming to the 21st July trackday for sure, just gotta sweet talk the bosses into getting the day off (shouldn't be a problem).

The new clutch is HARD though. I have a master cylinder and slave cylinder on the way from Carsten. I'll rebuild them before they go in and I should be all sorted.

Also making headway on flashing the non 7202 ecus, but I have a feeling it won't be cheap.

Emu
09-06-2009, 01:06 PM

Julie's got the Galant Fortis... Got back to Sydney last night. HJ got 6.50l/100km on full price speeding ticket weekend at 120kmph. Booyaa. The fortis could only manage 7.1l/100km at 100kmph. Fortis was flappy paddle gearboxed..... (boring)

No worries Buddy. Was good to catch up and meet Lee and Matt... Thanks for the night on the town and great conversation. Meat just doesn't look the same again tell Kirstin.

RDA should be replacing that for you no questions asked. Especially if they are only 1000 kilometres old.

It certainly raises some concern about the quality of these things.

VR-04-TT
11-06-2009, 04:17 AM
Could be a one-off dud. I've been using RDA rotors for years and never had a problem. I've given my current ones some real curry with the brembos and they've been hacking it. In fact, I think we have the exact same rotors Hugh.

I can't see warranty being an issue there. You should be getting a new one pretty swiftly.

I'm sure it was a one off. It's a freak failure I'd say. I did track them. But as if you owuld buy slotted rotors for going down to the shops and back!

Paul, what pads are you using? the A1RM's squeal SOOOOOOOOOO bad on mine. It's spine chillingly painful.

I've got Ferodo DB1678FF on the fronts and DB1521FF on the rear. The squeal is HORRID! Are the A1RMs from the QFM mob?

Yes they are. I'm suspecting it's the discs and your evidence backs that up. I had pretty loud squeal at the trackday with my old pads in too.

RDA slotted squealers?

I am considering swapping in your set of brembo pads to see if they are more quiet.... but man I have changed the pads so many times :(

Also the $300 the A1RM cost would seem like a waste.

Shims and/or brake lube on the BACK of the pads should help with the squealing. Obviously do not get it on the pad or disc surface and use it sparingly.

See the below thread for more details on what is suitable to use.

Good news on selling the car Steve, is the new owner on OZVR4? I know how you feel though, I sold my old TR Magna the day I picked up the VR4, was still sad to see it go.

Nice work, Paul - are you just using a stock shaft or a strengthened one (http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?p=109452)?

VR-04-TT
21-06-2009, 01:53 AM
Possibly strengthened, I'm picking up a new shaft from a guy around the Sydney area tomorrow morning. He does all sorts of gearbox/transfer case stuff for my mate's ex-ralliart friend (if that makes any sense at all lol).

It'll greatly depend on the cost, he told me a brand new shaft is about $250, he has a good second hand one (in his words "might as well be new") for $125. So I'll find out how much the strengthened ones are, and if he has any. If he doesn't have one then I can't as I need the car back on the road tomorrow night.

I will let you know how I go though, it will be a good option to know about nonetheless.

Thanks for the quick reply, I managed to find some time today to finish off the other side. Also put some QFM HPX pads in.

So far the warped disc vibrations that I had before seem to be gone, so the fronts must have been the culprits. Still have the rears to do when I get a chance.

Hope everyone on the Vic cruise had a good day, sorry I couldn't make it along.

I fitted starting fitting my RDA slotted rotors today, the attached picture is of the left (passenger) side. On the box it says it's the left one, and it looks OK to me.

But I remember reading something that slotteds were supposed to look 'backwards' when properly fitted. Can anyone else who's fitted these please confirm that what I've done is correct for the RDA brand rotors please?
Hmmm, there is something on that RDA Rotor concerns me, the way the slotted was done, it gives me shivers.

The slotted groove was all the way to the edge which it is the start of stress point and it will crack the disk then all the way to the mounting hub.

I read it somewhere that it happened already, I think it was Hugh.

Those are awesome photos! Top marks to you and your mate Jimmy ;)

Yesterday was fun... nothing like pulling over waiting for brakes (even Scottie's Brembo's) to cool of. The call on the radio to pull over when Scottie spotted Skurfer's brakes smoking was a good spot.

It was a bit eerie driving though the areas where the massive bushfires had ripped through Victoria. I didn't mind slowing to a snail's pace since it just allowed the whole thing to sink in. Katie's (the other half) role is to help rehabilitate the area and help people get on their land to start working again (clearing of fallen trees, waterway management, erosion control, etc).

Thanks to Skurfer for organising the cruise and the lads for a good turn-out.

Guys; anyone have prices/etc on new pads; I'm after something that will really brake if I plant the foot. Was looking at project U but refuse to pay $600 for pads alone.

It's been ages. I have been wanting to whinge about how much my new RDA slotted rotors squal with A1RM pads in them :X

caused by the slot extending to the edge of the rotor, which creates a stress riser. the slot should end before the edge, and the end of the slots should be round.

oh, I picked up a set of Evo VII wheels on Friday night too. :)

Now just trying to decide whether to go the cheap route and use the pair of half worn Bridgestone 215/45s I have and buy another pair to match, or get a set of Kumho KU36 like I had on my previous Supra...

also thinking about painting the wheels dark metallic grey. I think that would look better against the pearl white. powderoating would be better, but costs more too.

That's why I went for the DBA 4000 series rotors, who have a different slotted design to the RDA (crazy photos).

http://www.dba.com.au/4000series/default.asp

They held up quite well in yesterday's run, although I don't think I was pushing it as hard as Scottie or Skurfer since the route was unfamiliar to me.

Kitty, I'm glad you liked the photos :)

these slotted DBA's and RDA's will be fine for 98% of people. Even reasonably hard street driving doesn't punish brakes like track use does. So don't be too worried about them if its street use.

Well how big is your wallet? :D

The next step up after the DBA and RDA is Project-Mu. SCR Pure Plus6 (http://www.project-mu.com.au/en/products/rotor_scrpp6.php) if your running standard brakes, or SCR (http://www.project-mu.com.au/en/products/rotor_scr.php) if your using Evo Brembos

What is usually referred to as warping is actually a result of the pad compound layer that gets transferred to the disk. There is a thread on here about is somewhere, though not sure if it is in the members area.

The point being, it won't be your disks that are the problem, but that your pads are over heating and transferring material to the disk in an irregular fashion.

ECU couldnt be flashed in the car for some reason (difference in harness between 98 and 01 maybe??) but the flash was done on a bench harness and then put in the car.

Thanks for the link Kenneth, that is a very interesting read (apart from all the INSERT INTO post VALUES nonsense... it makes it look like someone was trying to do SQL injection!)

I guess my pads and rotors weren't bedded in properly. The first time would be my mechanic's fault, as he said he'd done it for me after installing them. Then after they "warped" once, I had the rotors turned, but didn't realise I needed to do the bedding in procedure again.

They're not too bad at the moment, so perhaps like the article says (if I read correctly) I can find some spot and try re-bedding them to fix them up.

RDA replaced my rear rotors for me and once they receive the broke one back they will let me know what happened.

I have heard people have much more trouble with DBA over RDA...

It was annoying but it's sorted now.

Mine still squeal like a bitch with A1RM pads... even putting on brake lube.

I'm thinking of taking it to my local brake place and see what they say.

All's well that ends well.

They are around 9kg each (which is light for an 18x8.5" wheel). I would honestly say they feel lighter than the 18x8 AVS5 copies I had on my old legnum, and even my local tyre fitter said they felt very light.

Lols. Hi guys! I went to find the rear camber fix guide today (hang on, I mean a friend went to check the rear camber fix guide...) and the site was gone!

Fitting 225/40s tomorrow because when I changed the oil this morning I found that the tyres were on the belts. Oops. Figured that when I do the tyres I might as well fix the camber and finally go to max low on the Teins!

I can probably help you here a little but you really should wait for Ozvr4 because it has a photo of the way the alternator comes out that I can't replicate. You can get your alternator out without jacking up your engine with patience and using that picture as it will only come out one way. Take your wheel and guards off. Take alternator belt off. Take alternator pulley off and the bracket behind it. Undo 2 alternator bolts and with patience the alternator will come out. Sounds easy???? It ain't, access is the pits!!!!! If you do it all from under the car, and your bolts aren't tight enough to require a breaker, and you have the right tools then it shouldn't take more than 2 hours. Mine took 15 hours but it was extremely difficult and I had to buy new tools. Good luck

Seriously, kudos to you, Ben, for openly admitting it took you ages (by everyone else's accounts). I know what it's like tackling jobs you would never have tried before. You often take too many bits off, or not enough, or the wrong bits, then snap things, etc., etc. It really is a voyage of personal discovery sometimes. I think when I first did my spark plugs, it was about 5 hours! A couple of times later, and it's now less than an hour! But it can still all go wrong, and something broken at the wrong time and in the wrong place can still add hours of work to an otherwise simple job. We're not either a) all perfect, or b) all trained mechanics! So yes, well done. /yes

including not having right tools, dropping bolts in the engine bay and trying to find them again, major issues getting the gasket to line back up on the manifold, having to take it back off when the throttle cable was on the wrong side of it, lets just say i learnt alot from that experience..

Sounds like a sticking relay to me. However, the whole starter motor is MD342382 (thats for a 1996 PFL auto) - I don't know if they changed it for later cars.

lol thanks for the support. The reason it took 15 hours was because someone had rounded off the alternator pulley bolt. It was fine further in the hole that the bolt sits in but no spanner that I had could get in that deep. A socket could get in there but all of them were too big to fit in the small gap they left you. After thinking the problem through for several hours and then trying my friends tools (all of which were too big as well) I ended up resorting to going and buying new tools ( a go through rachet set where the head is shallow enough to fit in). After that was sorted I realised that I couldn't get enough leverage to undo the bolt (they were on really really tight), hence more thinking time, and then finally a trip to the hardware to buy a metal pipe that would fit over the new rachet adding more leverage. Plus I included lunch breaks and the much needed beer breaks. People who reacon the 300zx bay is tight haven't seen the vr4 bay yet . PS VR-04-TT you may want to try helping considering I am so inadequate

millzy_88
07-04-2010, 07:31 AM
Ah ok, anything that can be done about a sticking relay? . Because my Dad said he thought it might be that as well but that it would probably be part of the startermotor assembly anyway or something along those lines. Thanks for the part number as well

elnevio
07-04-2010, 07:37 AM
I assume the relay is in the engine bay fuse box? Not sure on that though!

If it is that (and there!), then it's a heck of a lot easier and cheaper to change than a starter motor!

Kitty's VR4
07-04-2010, 07:53 AM
It may be the starter soleniod if it's click click click whilst trying to start !!!

Part Number MD619114... description = Switch Kit, Starter, Magnetic...

With an assistant, (equipped with a hammer), try starting the car, your assistant taps the starter motor/soleniod unit..... it may free it and allow for the car to start.

This is not fix.. but an ends to a means for testing if infact the solenoid is screwed....

The starter motor only cross references with the Lancer CK6A which was never avalable in OZ equipped with V6-6A11 , motor

The solenoid only cross references with lancer above and H42A & H47A Minica which wasn't sold in Oz either AFAIK

millzy_88
07-04-2010, 01:02 PM
Yeah after further inspection it does seem to be the solenoid, has the characteristic click anyway, called my mate at mitsi for a giggle and got quoted $1350 for a startermotor kit lol So will try the solonoid part number tomorrow.

What are the best places to try for parts like this, kempys/ralliart nz?? Cos mitsi are out of the question with their prices.

Do you think it is safe to put an original factory BOV backwards if you have a new BOV installed on top of the egnine near the airbox?
I just dont want to spend any more money untill i do more research.
With all the upgrades of the intercooler, the hard pipes, exhaust upgrade with down pipes I have lost power - do you think i would be right in saying that there must be a leak somewhere along the new piping?
Maybe on the silicon joints? grrrr i am almost regreting upgrades

This is the bike:

They're a really nice bike otherwise, look great. There's a 750cc version of the virago out too if you do want a bit of extra power but I get what you're saying, bikes are dangerous enough without insane speeds. I was thinkin of getting a 250cc trail bike and getting my bike license though it's gonna wait till I get the vr4 fixed up completely first.
Plus imagine how easy it would be to work on a bike after the vr4's cramped engine bay

Hi fellow refugees, need some help please!

What are the part numbers for the power steer and alternator accessory belts? I'm only looking for a dayco or similar number that I can tell the mechanic. Any specific belt tension specs I should know about?
Also is it a job any competent mechanic can do or do I need to find an import specialist?

Both belts went on me today, was a fun drive home without power steering.
Thanks for the help.

Dimi, Evo V/VI is DEFINITELY the way to go. Great cars and now really well priced also. My mate had a VI, sold it, bought a later model STI and said that he wished the VI never went, he said it was amazing and swears by Evos (he previously had a 180SX and an R34 GT-T). They look badass and deserve so much street cred. DO IT!!!

Hell, I'd trade my un-rego'd Legnum for an Evo ;)

Be very keen to see if these guys you have found are competitive with Carl at enginecaresystems (QLD's suposed only distributers) We as OZVR4 members are set up on some great rates. We pay only $78 for their signature series 0W-30.

The code for the Amsoil filter you mentioned is correct and you should not pay more than $22 for that.

With the 0W or 10W, toss a coin. It's the second number that really counts.

VOLK

Checked out enginecaresystems online (enginecare.com.au) and gave their number a call (1300774662). Turns out they're the same guys I spoke to yesterday! (alphalube.com.au) So it seems they are indeed the only known distributor in Qld of AMSoil synth lubes. Mentioned the discount for ozvr4 members but Carl's on leave. Let's see if they'll honour the price still...

30-04-2010, 01:18 AM
Castrol Edge 5w30 is the oil that quite a few of us in NZ use. It's a pretty good oil and the price isn't too bad - only thing is that the lifter noise comes back when it's near oil change time with this oil.

VOLK
30-04-2010, 05:49 AM
Sharp metallic tick that raises proportionate to revs will most likely be lifters. There's going to be plenty of threads on here which cover servicing/replacing lifters. Time for an engine oil flush perhaps, many users have cited it alleviates the issue for a little while. Sometimes the springs in the lifters have just given up.

VOLK
30-04-2010, 06:35 AM
Had a chat with Laurie at Engine Care Systems and he quoted me approx $90 for the 0w30 5L (it's about $76+GST for a US gallon) and $22 + GST for the filter. Think I might wait for Carl to come back from holidays to get the discounted price. I'm not quite prepared to pay $100 for oil. It's a mitsi, not some stupidly expensive euro supercar.

Godzilla: were there any conditions to the discount?

I can confirm it's working.

Have you tried cleaning out your cache etc as they have changed hosts and you may be trying to access the old host ?

I'm gathering you guys have Telstra as your ISP...

BuzzPuppy threw up this about the issue...

The probable issue is that Telstra's DNS servers are caching the entries for the previous host's IP address.

So everytime you reset your modem/router/PC, you'll still get that [OZVR4] ---> [old IP address] because it's fed from Telstra's DNS cache. When they refresh theirs, it'll repopulate. Optus/Internode/iiNet etc etc etc have their own DNS servers which probably refresh more regularly, so that sites with new IP addresses (like ours) are redirected properly.

Solution? Wait... unfortunately.

Citris has also logged the issue with the hosting company....

I have flushed my cache on my network at home (after the server change) and I was able to access the site but then went down about a week later again and yes I do have Telstra.

OzVR4 isn't actaully off-line, the problem is www.ozvr4.com works but ozvr4.com doesn't.

EDIT: I take it back, that was an issue, but that works now but they've had other problems.
