Seriously had enough of this car now!

Had the torque converter seal replaced 500 miles ago. £250 :|
Driving home from work this morning, pulled away at a roundabout, in D, not extremely fast for me.
Somethings wrong, it cant go into third, it keeps trying but no joy. I quickly try tiptronic, nothing still. Then I get the dreaded flashing N light. Game over.

Stop the car. 1/2 mile from home. A quick off and on with the ignition, puts it back in first gear. Pull away fine. Gets to 2nd-3rd change. Nothing again. FOOOOOK!!!!

Limp home in second gear. :sad3:
Rang the local specialist.
" That will be, new torque converter, recondition of the box, and labour - are you sitting down? " - Yes, he really said that - " Looking at £1300 all in "

Decision time is upon me.
Time to sell, as is, and cut my losses or continue with this wallet crunching rollercoaster ride of car ownership?

To be fair £1300 sounds like a bargain for the work stated. it is frustrating yes, but these cars are fantastic and it would be £1300 well spent. Besides, who is going to buy a car with a broken box when Mitsubishi want £10k for a replacement?! :rolleyes5

Stick withte the leggy :D it is agreat car ;)

:-D

You make a good point Dave, and yes, £1300 aint bad for the amount of work.
Im going to get the work done, but then she's up for sale.
Due to the non-resloved prang last year, I can see my already extortionate insurance policy taking an upward leap come next month.

Anyone here interested or know someone interested, PM me and I can give full details of the car and its troubled history with me.

Its not a welcome break up, cos I love that car, but its just become too much expense that could easily be wiser spent.

Just chuck a manual box in :-D
Cheeper to fix, give you a hint more power at the wheels, and a bigger left arm! It's all good.

Someone posted a while ago about all the parts to convert for £1500.

Sounds like circlip at rear of box has worked loose & destroyed a couple of plates. Could happen anytime. This is a known weak point of these boxes (3 instances posted on this forum).
When its fixed get them to wire it on, if you're using Steve at Ivan Autos he'll automatically do this when rebuilding. Unfortunately it's at the opposite end to the seal you've had replaced so wouldn't have been seen.
The job can be done for £1300 if the parts are sourced direct from manufacturer of g/box o/haul kit as opposed to from mitsubishi (exactly the same parts but £600 cheaper).

"Are you sitting down? " - Yes, he really said that

I sometimes say this at work if the customer sounds particularly nervous :lipsrseal

However, the part they're after is usually quie alot less than that :sad3:

I feel for you! My tiptronic self destructed at 36,000kms after the circlip let go and worked its way through the gearbox housing. Net result, NZ$3,500 for a new housing plus labour (not much change out of NZ$6,000). A plate has now been welded over the circlip so this won't happen again. Surely this is a design fault that Mitsubishi should be called to account for?

Have since replaced all the plates and had a bigger transmission intercooler fitted. All up NZ$11,000. It's now the proverbial "slushbox". It takes an age to change gear especially when cold and tends to "over run" gear changes. You can see the computer instruct the gear box to change gear on the dash but it takes a while for the gear box to catch up. Anyway, when I had the whole box reconditioned, the best advice I received was to not "thrash" it, especially in tiptronic mode. I no longer use the tiptronic function. Says something, doesn't it!

Cheers
Mark

Its a shame to hear that the box is not what she used to be... :sad3:
Since the rebuild, mine has felt as good as new, although, I am more aware of any out of place jerks or noises now...(probably my wallet getting paranoid :rolleyes5 )

Immediately after the rebuild, I was getting some real bad mpg.. but have since put this down to the learning curve of the ECU/Box relationship.

I wouldn't wish the hassle of the box dying on anyone, and my sympathies go out to all that have had this experience (and their wallets).

If anyone in the UK does suffer this fate, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend IVANS AUTO's based just north of London. My thanks to Borgan (club member) for putting me in touch with them. :D

Just sell it & buy a stick-shifter ;)

A shame your 'box troubles have tainted your ownership experience. :sad3:
