Just for a bit of fun I thought we would run a little competition for the upcoming Japshow on June 19th/20th. It's as simple as guessing the quickest time of the weekend by a CVR4 member.

Here are the rules:

1: Whoever guesses the nearest to the fastest time of the weekend by a Club VR4 member will win - guesses must be to the 1/1000th of a second e.g. 14.999
2: Only one guess per person - I will compile a master list here, so once you've posted a time it cannot be changed
3: All entries must be posted on this thread
4: Closing date for an entry is 9pm Thursday 17th June
5: The judges decision is final, and that's me so there !

The prize - EITHER a genuine Club VR4 T-shirt (black or white) or Baseball Cap (black only)

Good luck !

I'm going to discard any unnecessary upholstery, turn off the traction control, up my boost from 0.9 bar, & have a few litres of cool blue !! :-b & then I'll see just what my 333 bhp will do !! :D :D

Wodjno

Is this cool blue , the high octane fuel  .. cos if it is i want some . :rolleyes5 . where from ??? i also need to get my boost controller in the right pipe first ... Boost at moment about 8.5psi .. peaking at just over 9 psi .. :uhoh2aint Gonna get me no prizes  :

Ive got one coming over from Auz, not sure when it will arrive and I doubt we will get it in and the boost and fuel computers set up before sunday.

Mmmmm-I'm thinking with the right mixture of NOS and cool blue someone breaking the 13 secs barrier so I'll have 12.950 :rolleyes5

Okay. I'm thinking BDA will be running on 5, and Interlec will be nursing his gearbox, so I'm going to say Spirit or Simon to win with a high octane supplied time of 14.253.

Spirit
14-06-2004, 09:27 PM
I seriously think the heat is going to be a major factor, and even with the cool blue people are not going to hit top times. I am still going to wait for a weather forcast before I guess :-D

Also depends if Simon is going to make Clare sit on a cardboard box again

nursing my gearbox ?? like hell I will !! :rolleyes5 A short burst up the strip will do it no harm at all. [ I hope ]
I did a 14.015, before I had the unichip fitted, & less boost than I plan to this time ! I can only guess my BHP then, at around 300, so the extra 30 or so should make a bit of difference. :-b

How much boost are you planning on using Interlec, too much and you'll just be getting a load of hot air & less power. When you were last at the pod I'm sure that was your first run having had the unichip.

I agree more boost is not best!

Supercooling with Nitrous is! :p

I'm not going to be there, but I reckon with a brilliant but brutal start I could have taken .2 off my best time and another .2 by having the engine run as well as it could, and another .15 by getting the gearchanges spot on and then I'll deduct .1 for running some of that cool blue fuel and another .05 for taking the interior out. So for a tiptronic I'll go for 13.099. And thats my guess.

If someones got a well set up manual then 12.999. But thats not my guess.

Think your maths may be a bit dubious there Pete.........................

I do think you would be lucky to take that much time off due to what is essentially driver skill. Point and squirt hard!

borgan
17-06-2004, 11:49 AM
Maths seem fine to me : 13.899 - .8 = 13.099.
Seriously though cutting .2, possibly more, from an improved start should be feasible given practice. Being at that start line with all those eyes watching isn't quite the same as being at a set of lights or on a deserted test track. If there's a long queue it's adds to the adrenalin. Knowing it could be 2 hours before your next run isn't always the recipe for a 100% run. It'll be interesting to see the variation in times by each driver.

Must pay better attention. My maths also seems out .7 not .8. :$

17-06-2004, 11:53 AM
Dave the maths are right, the reasoning might be unclear.

Driver skill - the start, yes I agree is driver skill, but the improved gear changes I'm thinking about are mostly mods not skill, engine is not, fuel is not, weight is not.

enigma

The maths is OK, but the numbers are possibly not then!

0.2 on the start is impossible, the clock starts when your wheels move. You may get a better launch and ultimately shave some time off, but 0.2 may be pushing it.

0.2 for the engine, well this is probable but is very much dependant on the conditions. If your engine is warm and sucking warm air all the way up the queue then it will perform badly, if it is cold the gearbox will perform badly. I think there is more scope for slower times this weekend due to the much warmer weather than when you ran last time. I would like to say my engine will run better this time as last time I had huge flatspots and backfires at full revs in 3rd gear!

0.15 for the gearchanges is optimistic as well I think, I have run the strip many times and I still cant change gear better than the box can! Its close but experience says put it in D and gun it! I can get to 60 quicker in tip, but only just. For repeatability and consistency auto is the way to go I think. Sure you may shave 0.15 off, but only after 20-30 passes experimenting with different shift points.

0.1 for cool blue is very pessimistic, Derek gained over half a second last time out with the super fuel! This will obviously not be the same for everyone, but I think it is well worth a dabble.

Weight is the single most important factor, I have posted before, but here are some numbers:
Taking my car running 13.999 @ 3700lbs (1681kgs) then removing just 20kgs results in a 0.05 second improvement. I weigh in at 130kgs, so if Mo drove my car it would be about 60kg lighter, remove the interior another 30kg, remove the stereo another 20kg and the weight would reduce to 3458lbs and the time would come down to 13.73. To gain this time using brute force would require an additional 25BHP.

Now to coincide with my guess of 13.4, I need to gain 50BHP.........this will be achieved with a squirt of nitrous. Now if I can also shed 50kgs (not me but from my car!) this will come down to 13.30......nicely! Another 25bhp will see me at 13.0 which is somewhere near my ultimate goal. I did say last Japshow that I would see you in the 12s!

If we consider VX, and conservatively estimate a reduction of 200kgs, and an increase to 800BHP we get 10.351.........excited? Oh yes! :D 1000BHP would mean 9.7

Do some calcs yourself

Here (http://www.stealth316.com/2-calc-hp-et-mph.htm)

My original comment about the maths was just a flippant one suggesting that the science of driving in a straight line is more complicated than it may at first appear. There are many factors to consider and some of the ones that may be overlooked will have the biggest influence!

Now then, you've made some good points there Dave, and my maths were wrong ! Better stick with 13.099 though in the light of what you said about fuel.

The start to count for .2 gain. There is a thought that whatever you can take off your 60ft time will be doubled by the end of the quarter. How true it is I don't know. But I'll go with it. My best run had a 2.131 second 60ft time, so I figure that getting the 60ft time down by at least .1 should be possible, which means .2 at the finish. My starts were terrible, I fouled twice by creeping forward. The temptation to race was to much, should have just concentrated on the start.

Engine, just got to get it running as well as it can, and it wasn't last time.

Gearbox - my 3rd to 4th changes have always taken an age, both in auto mode and tip. My run was done in auto mode. There are some things, which I think others may have had done, to make the changes quicker. Borgan ?

Fuel - 0.5 is a massive, and easy, gain for cool blue, I'd be happy with that !

Have fun.

*****COMPETITION NOW CLOSED - LET THE GAMES COMMENCE*****

I will post the final result upon my return on Sunday night - good luck to you all and in particular to those of us running the strip ;)

Of course the winner must produce a slip to confirm the time ;)
