What do you guys think about a Wellington - Palmerston North meet? 1st wek of August say?

The Saddle Road (could visit the big windfarm there), Pahiatua Track, Manawatu Gorge area offer some good driving roads.

10 - 11am could be do-able I'd say. How fast can we do the drive from Welly to PN I wonder - 2hrs perhaps (1.30hr if you're Mark Lundy ;-), so the Welly guys would need to start around 8am to 9:00am.

It usally takes the 1:30-2 hour mark if we are being good - depends on roadworks and traffic... :)

Well count me in as I'd be keen, provided I survive the bloody /pale 'Swine Flu' :sick2: , cause I'm feeling like crap at the mo with the flu.................:uhoh2: /Fever

I know and love Saddle road as I worked on the big Meridian findfarm there for a couple of years................./Steeringw /rally

And I know a great little cafe at the eastern end of the Manawatu gorge, out of the way and with a great picturesque bush lined car park which could be good for some pictures if the weather's good............./Camera

OK J, here's your chance to use this event to impress the committee that you are 'the man' for the Wellington event organisers job.............:smug:

Route Suggestion:

From the square in Palmy, head out to Pahiatua via Pahiatua Track.

Then up to Woodville via state highway 2.

Then over to Ashhurst via Saddle road, then back into palmy?

With our normal stops etc, we should be able to get through that in a couple of hours.. :P

Thoughts?

I was thinking meet up at BP Palmy at 10am (about where the SH3 sign is, just above the P in Palmerston), then go south to Fitzherbert, Aokautere, Pahiatua Track, the Pahiatua, up to Woodville via SH2, along Saddle Rd, then drop down into Ashhurst and go to Wynn's Cafe, unless that is on the other side of Woodville?

Akl members will need to leave at about 4:30 from BP bombay, Welly members about 8am :)

Pretty much the same route i suggested Brad. :)

Will confirm with Wynn where this cafe is. :)

Was also thinking that the Welly peeps could make the run back over Saddle Road to go back home over Rimutuka Hill? Rather than going all the way back down the other side?

Does anyone have preferences for a sat or a sunday?

Sundays im at Church so cant make that, but then again 1 day wont kill me!!
ps Allistar Pahiatua Track is an AWSUM track,if you really wanna push your car round a snake style route downhill challenge with Very sharp corners then youll love this 1 and Saddle road from Wooodville is a awsum hillclimb with heaps of corners too both up and back down the other side.

our cruiz was about 2 hours and we did evrything you mentioned guys except the saddle road,so should be a fun time, and BRING CAMERAS and sum1 to film or take the pics lol... i have my co-driver allready lol..hope she wont get car sick

Yep I'm still above ground............. just.

OK cafe location details to help with planning, Sorry for delay posting these, been sick with Flu, though not Swine Flu........../pan

As I and others have been having problems getting images to place correctly within a posting, not sure where the image will be, but here goes.............:sigh:

Cafe is at the eastern end of the Manawatu gorge, across the long narrow one lane bridge there........... see the red arrow on the attached map..... hopefully.........:uhoh2:

28567

Another thing to note is the eastern side of saddle road was extensively upgraded so 50m turbine blades and tower sections could be trucked into the windfarm site, so isn't as challenging as it once was. Still OK road though, don't get me wrong.

Here's a couple of pictures of what I'm talking about, just in case anyone's interested...........:snore:

Looking forward to event already............../bounce

EDIT:........ Yep, as I suspected, images all over the show............ oh cr*p..........grrrrrrrr

It is easy to get to. Drive south until you get to the SH1 and SH3 turn off which is clearly marked SH1 Wellington and SH3 Palmerston North, follow SH3 until you get to Palmy. Very very simple.
