Next weekend 25/26 july, I am looking to get the box swapped over. BBQ, and light drinks afterwards (BYOB). Just looking to see who is interested. I'm in Katikati, 30 mins from Tauranga, (closer to auckland). Brad is coming down as he's the mechanical genius but it would be nice to sorta have a mini-meet..

EDIT: possibly 1-2nd august?

Yeah unfortunately the budget doesn't stretch to that just yet - box change is far more urgent. I'm sick of walking 30 mins to work and 30 mins home...

well jog then as it will only take you 20 mins there and 20 back :D

Whoops, didn't realise you wanted it that weekend, Adie is keen for some help on the Saturday to do things on his car. Does it have to be that weekend? :)

confusis

Well the box is in Palmy, so I can't get it before the 1st and I'm busy that weekend in Whakatane, but I can deliver it when I'm going home on the monday (3rd).

Might be looking like the 8th and the 9th?

confusis

Yeah works for me, thanks brad!

confusis
22-07-2009, 09:09 AM
Well with the delay in the work, a full oil/coolant change will be completed too :)

Ok 8-9th. Would prefer the saturday but what works best for people.

Any more takers?

Will need to be the 9th for me, something has come up on the Saturday. We should be able to do most of it in one day.

confusis
29-07-2009, 10:15 AM
Most of it?

The box should be in and the engine mounts should be all back in, holding the assembly in it's correct place. But perhaps smaller things won't be back in place. Sometimes things go really smoothly and sometimes small things hold you up. For example on Dan's car (wintertidenz) we spent 5 hours trying to remove his transfer case.

On an ST-R at least there are a lot less pipes and things to get in the way, AND the gearbox is about 40kg lighter.

ah ok. could I help it by draining the box, unbolting the shifter and whatever I can see from above, getting the car ready for your axle stands? that is on sat nite. I don't have a particularly strong socket set so might not be able to crack the box bolts..

I'd do this:

Empty and remove radiator
Empty gearbox oil
Empty Transfer case oil
Remove exhaust
Remove air filter, maf, associated piping
Remove engine cross-member - the big bar that has the tow hook cover on it that runs from the front of the engine bay to just beneath the firewall

Can't think of much else you'd need to do

confusis

Hmmm... transfer case oil? Is this included in the 8 litresof ATF? Would it be ok for the car to sit there with all those bits missing for 20 or so hours?

bradc
29-07-2009, 10:42 AM
Transfer case oil is different, but I've got some here that can be used. The car will be fine with all that stuff removed.

confusis

Ok. Unbolt the exhaust as in is there just a front section or does the whole damn thing have to come off? Is there an exhaust gasket I will need? I have about 3 litres of manual box oil - 80w90? sitting here unused.. Right stuff?

bradc
29-07-2009, 10:54 AM
Just the front section up to the Cat. You won't need an exhaust gasket.

The manual gearbox oil isn't the right stuff, you need normal diff oil.

Ok... Bottle says Manual trans/Hypoid Diff/Transaxle... Oh well :) Been sitting around since my first car a few years back.. Tried to swap a 5speed into a car that had a 4speed. (82 Skyline) Bell housing was different and box was wrong length even though it was from the same model car.. mine was a 4cyl and the box was from a 6.. lol

I'm pretty sure that I'm not working that day, so if you want I can come give a hand.

What oil are you going to use? I have a liter of amsoil 0w30 laying around and a liter of royal purple 10w30, so if your going to get one of those two oils your more than welcome to have my left overs.

Oh and I have a oil filter you can have too if you need. I'm assuming the N/A use the same filter as the VR4?

I also have enough engine coolant mix if you need that too.

It is all just stuff that is laying around doing nothing so if you need any of it you might as well use it :)

Have removed most of the wiring loom from the area, battery+tray, intake up to the throttle body, shifter linkage... actually doesn't sound like much even though it took a couple hours. one more plug (right at the back at the motor end) to go though. can't seem to remove it.

bradc
06-08-2009, 06:31 AM
The plug in the top of the gearbox?

confusis
06-08-2009, 06:40 AM
