What oil and how much of would be recommended for my ST-R's motor? 6a13 ohc.. Might as well do a service when i'm doing the box swap!

You need about 4.5 litres and fully synth 0w30 or 5w30.

ok. considering katikati can get pretty warm in summer, would 30 be high enough?

0w30 is fine for a VR-4 even.

its 4.3L and ow30 is over kill. mitsi actually say to use 15w40! id say 10w30 or 40 would be the way to go

With fully synth help with the tappet rattle?

Not when you first put the oil in, but after 5000km or so there will be a difference.

I used Amsoil 0w30 in the ST-R and it went for 24500km without an oil change. There was still no tappet noise AT ALL, even on a -4C morning from cold!

IMHO a good oil like Edge fully synth 5w30 will be way overkill for an ST-R, but you'll be able to keep it in there for twice as long as mineral oil.

24500? OUCH! lol. I was thinking magnatec?

The 'theory' (marketing mostly imho) behind magnatech seems to be a little too happy and 'good' if you know what I mean. Plus the ads on tv pissed me the hell off.

The ST-R did a lot of cold starts, towing (mostly big loads of wood, and the 100km trip with the green VR-4 on a trailer), and well if I'm honest when I drove it, I accelerated hard, regularly changed at 6500-7000rpm and so on :D

What brand did you use? EDGE? is that Castrol edge?

I use Castrol 5W-40 in my ST-R and chage it every 15000km - no problems and no tappet rattle at all. You can use 10W-40 as well but then I would go for a change every 10000km

I would guess that 0W is too much for that engine, as the oil pressure must be different to the VR-4 engines. So it might be overspecified for a ST-R...

it has castrol edge 5w30 in it now, only done about 2000km with it so far though. The green VR-4 has it in too, will have done about 3000km in it by the end of the weekend, but again that isn't very much.

IIRC, Castrol did not sell Magnatec in the USA for quite a few years after it came out in the UK. I suspect the reason might be due their advertising watchdogs having a few more teeth. :)

I would not use Magnatec in my car - other than as a "flush".
