My mate is just aobut to purhcase the above.

He is a car nut and is most likely to challenge me to a quater mile in crail at some point as ive been talkign up the vr4 a bit.

MY question is, what will i need to do to get my standard galant vr4 to something that can beat that, whilst he has more pure power, im assuming the lack of twin turbo and 4 wheel drive will play in my favour at least a little bit.

thoughts on mods / target BHPs to aim for?

Chris

PS Gowf you could just lend me your leggie for a run hahahaha

For the 1/4 mile run, it would all depend on what sort of traction the Mustang can get.

If you got the start right I would have thought you would have a good chance of being the faster.

It all depends on the Mustang. If it's an original 1967 car with original spec engine I doubt if it's actually got 375hp, and unless he's done some work to the suspension with traction bars, drag shocks, grippy tyres etc.. he'll wheelspin alot of that power away..

Due to the gearing and 4WD on the VR4 you'll probably be way quicker off the line, but he may catch halfway once he's hooked up.

I was talking to Pezza today about doing a back to back acceleration run with my Camaro and VR4 to see which was quicker where.

You'll probably take it. I found at the last trip to Crail that the moe powerful cars just span there wheels at the line where as we just took off.

I'd recommend that you get a boost contoler if you dont all ready have one.

yeah I've been speaking to gowf about the boost controller as one of my first purchases.

the £170 - £199 ones form rspec should do the trick yes?

A £20 ball & spring one will do but you will need a boost gauge.

Will beat you, power to weight ratio of the VR4 is about 170bhp per tonne, the mustang with its non stock 375bhp engine and curb weight less than the VR4 has about 250bhp per tonne, also stock the mustang will run a 13 odd second qaurter mile....

To get your car there you will want
Exhaust 3" all the way downpipes back
EBC/MBC
Bigger intercooler
Airfilter
Fuel pump
ralliart decals
mirrors folded in

this was against a 5.7 litre Camaro he did beat me, not by much, but most I got out of mine was a 14.6

Looking on the WWW, the 1969 (Boss 429) mustang could manage the following with 375bhp stock but that is with a 7lt V8!:

429cu-in/375bhp: 0-60 in 6.8 sec, 1/4 mile in 14.0 sec @ 103mph.

ralliart decals

So how many seconds do the decals shave off? More the better?

oooh that will be tight! 0-60 you have him then he gains it all back.

Start stripping some weight now!

The power quotes from the muscle car era are massively unreliable depending on if they were trying to sell the car on performance or squeeze it in under regs.. Bit like the Japanese 90's one I suppose... That 429 Boss Mustang with modern Drag radials, not 60's rubber, will massively improve on that time.

Suprised you didn't get a better start on him, you took off at almost the same speed, then the torque pulled him ahead.. Good effort though !!!

That's very true, some muscle cars of the 60's were pulling over 100bhp over quoted stock bhp!

You do know that my car has a leather interior, had a full tank of fuel and a boot full of camping gear, I mean full of camping gear, and not only that it was running on the wrong spark plugs, bloody Halfords!!!! (where else do you get plugs at 7.30 at night)
He had the advantage of
1 race seat
1 mini fuel cell
slick tyres
There was not a lot I had in my favour he did only beat me by a whisker though,
I ran the 14.6 he ran a 14.01, beat me by 0.545 which is not alot considering

Although now on the right spark plugs and no boot full of crap, I am curious if I can break into the low 14s,
