Ok Guys, I have had my Galant for a year and a half. The gear box went within one month of me buying it which i managed to find a replacement. The box has once again started making the most awful scoring noise within 2 days.

After checking the box oil level i realized it was VERY low and is most likely the cause of all the scoring noise.

My questions.

Does anyone think this is worth having fixed?

If the answer is NO which is my guess, Does anyone know where i can pick up a second hand one? I have called about 50 Breakers today and nobody has one.

S reg Galant 2.5 24 (manual)

Any help would be great.

Maybe it could be rescued with a flush and replace oil with some decent stuff like Amsoil?

Thanks, i will look into it although it is VERY loud (the scoring) do you still think the flush could work??

Manuals are well known for the input bearing being noisy. Second hand boxes are not so easy to find, but a gearbox specialist should be able to recondition yours.

Replace or repair? I guess you need to look at the costs implications of each and then have an argument with your heart and head. Good luck!

You can also look for the internals of any F5M42 gearbox. All manual 8G 2wd gearboxes have the same components inside, sometimes different gear ratios though.

There seems to be a problem in the UK that every 2WD manual box is being systematically destroyed by a certain Mr. Batty!! Like they were designed for 600 bhp? /pan :P

The bearing may get worse quickly, or may not. I'd be tempted to put it off until it gets to the point I think it might disintegrate.

If it is the input shaft bearing, I would get it fixed and ASAP.

The longer it is left the more likely you are to get scoring on the gear / synchro faces (I believe thats what I was told... it was some time ago).

When I had my VR-4 done, I was told getting it early was the difference between a new bearing and a new gearbox.

That's the only advice anybody can give really.

What I'd do isn't what I would recommend to people asking me. I should have made that more clear!

It's more than likely input shaft bearing - it's a ~£100 part, but it's just a pain to do, as it involves stripping the box, so most of the cost is labour.

Once you've done it though - you'll know you've got a box good for many, many years, rather than going for another "unknown" box where you might have the same again!

Thanks for the advice everyone.

As i have called about 200 car breakers in the uk and probably spend the equivalent of a brand new gear box on my BT phone bill, ive decided to take the box out and have some intelligent person look at it.

If it can be repaired I will probably just do that. Although as iam writing this i just got a quote for a box (dont have any details on it yet) for £317.40.

How does this price sound to everyone? :huh2:

You'll still be in the same position of spending £317.40 on a gearbox that you are unsure of if/when it may develop the same problem (if it's an input shaft bearing)

Does the noise disappear as you dip the clutch? Is it worse when you're accelerating or engine braking? Is it quiet when you're on very light throttle and not really doing either accelerating or decelerating?

If so - sounds like Input Shaft Bearing.

See how much someone will charge to strip, replace and rebuild, and compare that to your 2nd-hand and unknown-quantity replacement box (which may still require it doing in X thousand miles...)
