View Full Version : Lower Balljoint Recall

I got a Recall notice letter on Saturday. It says that the lower ball joint seal on my car may be subject to water ingress which could cause excessive play in the mounting. I am to take the car to my nearest dealer.

I read about this recall a long time ago. Has it affected many of you out there?

By some weird co-incidence I got the recall notice this morning.

This would seem to be quite widespread, mine is a 2000?

Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to mitsi we go....

Does anyone know what years this affects? My car is going in on wednesday for a new front suspension piece for a rattling/knocking noise. This is the second time it's been in for work because of this problem, the first time a component was replaced that didn't solve the issue. This time another suspension component is being replaced, and I know that the lower ball joint on this side was replaced about 40000 miles ago by the previous owner. Could this be the issue?

Uh-oh....:uhoh2:

Mine's a 2000 Model year.... Didn't think the balljoint recall affected UK models. Time to call the dealer! :sad3:

Kieran

Just called the dealer.

The notice in the UK was only released on Friday. Not all cars are logged on the system (yet), so they couldn't give a set of production/chassis codes.

The notice apparently says, all Galant STs from start of production to the end of December 2000.

Now, Galant STs are a Jap model. I imagine however that the UK saloons/estates are based on them. So, 2.5s, 1.8/2.4GDIs and the evergreen 2.0GLS *may* be affected.

I would suggest giving it a week/10 days to see if a letter comes through, and then checking with your dealer. Reason I say this is that my GLS was built in early 2000. However, the dealer's computer is not flagging it...but the dealer said to see if I get a letter through anyway - it's a bit too early to tell yet.

Mine was first reg. June 2002.

I haven't checked the manufactured date, but can't believe it was a 2002 model year and built in 2000, so the info you have been given might be wrong.

...Mind you, this is Variava's we're on about... The words 'arse', 'two hands', 'couldn't find', 'their', 'with', 'and a torch' spring to mind sometimes!!

Aren't Variava's known locally as Viagra's? If not I'd be surprised.

Am I allowed to hijack my own thread?

I've been waiting for this one! :) I had an 'advise' at my last MoT in September that one lower ball joint was on it's way out. :end: I then heard a rumour that there was a recall on the way (can't remember where I heard it, so was beginning to think it imagined it , particularly when it failed to appear on the VOSA website :headsc: ).

So let's all get those finger's crossed for me please!!

I've spoken to mitsubishi about this today.

The part that is covered by the recall is the part that I had replaced about 6 weeks ago. :furious3: I will be calling head office tomorrow to demand a refund on the work and part.

Just to note that my '98 is also under the recall, and the dealer said I'd receive a letter, but to ignore it as they'd now carried out the inspection. They gave me head office's number to try to get a refund on the bit that was replaced.

My recall has now arrived too. :) Since mine is a very early 8G one it would seem that the whole of the UK 8G production is effected.
The dealers are going to be busy.

What's this about a "ball recall" Polabear? Medical problems!! :p Didn't know they came with a guarantee.

I spoke to head office and explained that the part covered by the recall I'd had replaced by a franchised dealer only a few weeks ago... They immediately said that I should send a copy of the invoice to the address on the recall letter and they would refund the cost.

Kudos mitsubishi, now just hope that they see the process through.

I have detailed the effected Chassis Numbers under Recall 1003 in the "Members" section.

Members, check that out. Others post your chassis number and I or others can tell whether it is effected.

i'm away to hunt out my local mitsy-dealer's P/number,as ive got a loose feeling coming from my passenger side?
what exact-are they replacing? one side or two?

adam_shaw
02-07-2004, 08:24 AM
Even if they find one joint questionable they should be replacing both - however if they find no problem they will be re-sealing the joints (again both) and leaving it at that. [According to Motorworld in Oxford - who give me an MX5 when they have my car, I love that sort of service :-b ]

I'm hoping tot get the joints, since at 57K I'm guessing they're not gonna be in the greatest condition.

I have booked mine in for Tuesday..

The service manager stated that they have had to change up to 80% of the cars that have come in...

I am not sure if my mind is playing tricks on me but I think I can hear that creaking sound from left front too...

Of those who have had their car checked so far who also have had any modifications like non standard shocks or springs; did the dealerships still change the parts or did they show any reluctance?

Hmm.. just wondering here...

Cheers

Mine went in today too. The Nearside's goosed, but the offside is ok. Makes sense really, as the nearside takes the most battering! I'm tempted to pay to get both done though.... I don't like the thought of having a balljoint that *could* fail in the future..... :undecided

I had both replaced last week. Before, the car frequently generated a strange vibration and noise from the front when the wheels were turned whilst the car
was virtually stationary.

After the replacement of both joints its only happened once...it may be related...

Yeh, I had that weird grinding/ bad bed springs sound when turning the steering wheel, plus the suspension clunks when moving from forward to reverse (or vice versa). with my previous galant and paid for the work around Xmas time.

That work plus the magic 54K service came to over 1k!!! Am so glad it was a company car and that I did not have to pay for it out of my own ocket!

I am still amazed by the amount of owners on here who have experienced
the same problems. I wonder how long about Mitsu knew about this problem, it seems to be affecting cars from 97 onwards! Tis a real bugger for those who would have forked out for this work before the recall.

Would that have anything to do with the fact that you drove round Castle Combe in a clockwise direction Kieran?

Possibly, but the clonk-clank-etc noises were there long before that! Though I do agree that it probably didn't help things!

Just had mine done with similar results, new nearside fitted but the offside apparently completely within tolerance. Ride transformed - handling yet to be tested!

I've just got back from my local Mitsubshi service centre. My car needs a new suspension arm.

I have an X Reg V6 Sport.

The idiots left my boot open so I was driving it away with it flapping!

They have to order the part in. I thought they would already have them. They're fitting it on the 24th July.

Had a call back from dealer and they said no existing recalls on my car .. but i got that clunking noise from drivers side right when going from forward to reverse sometimes , that somebody else mentioned in previous post .. was this related to ball joints or was it suspension related.. and are mitsy just trying to fob me off cos it's an import ??

I haven't noticed any noises or knocks in 5 years, but have no idea if the bits have ever been inspected during services. Mine's included in Kiwi's affected chassis no. list, so expect that the work is required. Does anyone know the Mitsi part no. for the replaced bits? I'll see if the work's been recorded on previous bills and try to claim any cash back if I've been charged.

Mine was in on Monday, but they didn't find anything. Still, drove it away with a squeek coming from a dry joint or something. Pity they didn't grease it up when they had the wheels off. Plonkers!

Bugger! They also did the annual underseal check and found rust on both front doors underneath the rubber seal at the bottom.

And the car's only 2 years old! Doesn't bode well for the future does it?

I had my Carisma for 5 years and did 150k in it with no sign of any rust!

A bit of a dirt trap there. Mine get wiped out after a wash. Helps if you open the doors fully and let the water drain out also.

That's do it. But last year they refilled the door cavities with underseal. I know 'cos they left it to harden on the bodywork and I had to take it back to be removed.

What gets me is they charge you £45 to find out that it is rusty and needs repairing. I don't know of any other manufacturer who insists on the inspection and also charges for it. Are Mitsis particularly prone to rust?
