The replacement box arived for my car yesterday, and unfortunatley it has a small chip out of the top corner of the clutch pack.

This has sheared off one of the bolts and opened it up so obviously it would just leak used in its current condition.

The garage has a gearbox specialist who is going to try and remove the clutch pack from my old box and swap it for the one in the replacement, if its still in decent condition.

Has anyone done this before or does anyone have any tips or Do's and Don'ts?

Like is it possible to replace the "cover" without the pack itself, anyone know what force to set things at inside (im told there are things that require setting and putting in exactly right or it may not work at all / won't change right).

Anyone got any helpful ideas?

Was it described as damamged? If it can be repaired do it, but i would be asking for some money back to cover the extra labour costs. Take plenty pics of the damage.

I'm pretty sure you will just have to swap covers from the other box as long as the guy who does the work knows what he is doing

It's the cover and not the clutch pack

Ill ring the garage now and let him know the cover should be transferable without removing anything. Thanks :)

The guy does know what hes doing anyway. He hasnt worked on a VR4 before but his specialisation is gearboxes and hes been working with them for over ten years so hopefully hell be able to sort it :)

I would also be looking for a good chunk off the price you paid for the auto box given that it is unuseable at the minute unless you put a new housing on it

Also get you mechanic to give the box a good check over when he replaces that cover as some crap may have got inside

I've already asked him to have a look :)

It was the car breaking on the forum and the guy who sold it jsut had his garage remove it and ship it and he hadnt seen the box after it had been removed. He's profusley apologised and offered to sort out the costs of fixing it up :)
