Attempts to remove the old gearbox failed today, mostly due to lack of and poor quality tools on my part.

So we shall attempt next weekend!

Any takers?

what happened? couldnt get the transfer case off?

bradc

Basically yes, we were unable to remove the last bolt holding the trans onto the engine. Because of that we had to remove the transfer case from the gearbox which we failed to do.

so it was the bell housging bolt behind the transfer case? mike has the bolts to get the transfer case off. makes it a lot easier!

A slide hammer is great for removing the centre shaft and then the trans box will just slip off. It saves a lot of time and reduces risk of damage to the boxes

Bump-de-bump!

So who's keen?
Will be a payed CVR4 member by tommorow too :D

Where would I get a slide hammer from?

You don't need a slide hammer any more, I'll bring down those two threaded bolts I was telling you about.

honestly it is easier to take the inner shaft out, and the transfer box just pulls away from the gear box with ease. no need to force it off with bolts.

Why make one when they can be bought for about £15 with all the correct hooks and screw in bits. well they can in the UK anyway.

Last time me and Brad tried to pull the shaft out on a car, it refused to budge... we had to wind the transfer case off with the bolts in the end. Just really depends how stuck the shaft is - we even attached another VR-4 to my one and tried to push the car back to pull the shaft out /lol

There's a slide hammer for $125 on TradeMe at the moment... http://www.trademe.co.nz/Business-farming-industry/Industrial/Manufacturing-metalwork/Other/auction-235259411.htm

It took about 5 hours or so to pull it all apart, then we stopped because we couldn't go any further without getting the transfer case off. Then we couldn't link up for a few weeks due to other committments, and now today we haven't done anything because it is rainy.

confusis
23-08-2009, 05:59 AM
