Get some GL4 only oil. Do not get GL5 or even GL4/GL5 oil as the gearbox will not like it.

These boxes have a tendancy to crucnch when cold - sepecially into second. This is made worse if the oil in the box is GL-5 compatable. If you change the oil, then make sure it is GL-4 but not GL-5. (Some say they are both, don't use them if they do!)

It could also be the gearbox end of one of the control cables. The rubber mounts on the top of the box perish, leading to bad gear selection. There are threads on here explaining how to fix this too.

The box internals are fundamentally the same as the 5speed Evo boxes, so I guess any other issues will be similar to the Evo. The only one I know of is the input shaft bearing suffering wear a bit prematurely.

i'll give the oil a go first and see if it helps.then if not the cables and bushes.
just a quick question as this is my first vr4 ..is the manual box not very smooth normally..even when warmed up. it feels sluggy and hard..is that normal trait?

Not sure I'd describe it as that?

Where are you based? If midlands, get in touch with me! If somewhere else, then maybe someone else can have a look?

I've got the AMSOIL manual transmission oil in mine changes gear nice and smooth, sometimes from cold its a bit stiff getting into 1st but find if i go into 2nd then back into 1st its OK....

from the library.......Recommended:

Amsoil MTG (Manual Transmission and Transaxle Gear Lube 75W-90) - The manual gearbox MUST have a oil that conforms to GL-4 only. The later GL-5 spec oils will impair your gearchange. This is because GL-5 is so good at reducing friction, it doesn't allow the syncromesh to get enough 'bite' when changing gear.

*Do not order Amsoil AGR (Fully Synthetic SAE 75W-90 Gear Oil) as this is a GL-4 and GL-5 spec oil.

Yes that's it or you can buy it from Amsoil in the uk direct and use the club discount

Yes thats the very one. Seems like Opie are selling it 1P cheaper than my list price.
If you can get free carriage go for Opie, if not it might be cheaper from me with the club discount. Totally different ball game if you are changing more than just the gearbox oil; then again Nick Mann can do the whole job for you.

Mine is a little tricky to get into 2nd when cold but is fine as soon as it's warmed up a bit. I would say the gear changes in general are a nice positive shift. I've got GL-4 only oil in mine, again the Amsoil variety.

Feel free to pop down - only about 35-40 mins from Telford. Send me a PM if you want my contact details.

I have got Amsoil MTG in stock and can pass on the clubs 15% discount if you want to go down that route.

Nick.
