Hi guys I dunno if any of you ever encountered this but when my 96 galant vr4 type s slows to a stop and gear automatically goes to first there is a noise. I first heard it in my yard when I put it in drive. Thought was the brakes as I had not driven it in about a week. It is the kind of sound that brakes make when they haven't been used a while, that iron sound, clank clang whatever you want to call it. Everything else works perfectly. gear changes everything. It doesn't happen consistently, but I am worried about it. Can you please help me?

Does it happen going from neutral into drive?

It happened once in the yard like that. But I think that I took my foot off brake and then that noise came. So am not sure though. thanks

Does it sound like it is coming from the front of the car or the rear?

Hey it sounds like it is coming from the front. My dad says that it could be the drive shaft and the trans has a play between so when it slows it does that. It sounds like front to me though.

Have a play with those then and see what happens!

Just a thought - have you checked oils in the transmission and transfer case? It could be a result of not enough oil.

Not a bad idea, although for the the gearbox it would be unlikely to drive well if it was low on oil. Definitely something to check though.

Thanks much. Have not gotten opportunity to check it as yet as we have had much rain past few days. Thanks much.

To check the ATF level properly, ensure you're parked on a level surface and then cycle through each selection and pause for a second or two, eg:

P (hold for 2 sec)
R (hold)
N (hold)
D (hold)
Move across to + / - and push it into 2nd
pull it back to 1

then repeat back up to park.

If I'm not mistaken the level should be checked with the engine running and the fluid should be a nice ruby red colour.

Yep, with engine running and in neutral - you get a false reading if it's in park.

Hi Guys, I checked the fluids, did the sequence and so on. Fluid levels look to be good. doesn' smell burnt or looks brown has the red colour still. have not gotten it up on a heist as yet to see about the shaft either. What fluids do you recommend? Gonna have it serviced. And how much engine oil should i get? and for ayc.
