hey, ive recently bought a 1999 galant v624v 2.5 manual on a V plate with a faulty gearbox with the intention of repairing and keeping as a family car with a bit of pork. I have taken the gearbox out now and when u spin the shaft by hand it makes a rather loud rumbling noise which im assuming is one of the bearings. ive been quoted 600pound for a re-con box. there are not many of these gearboxes out there that i can find. my question is would a gearbox from a 2.0 v6 FTO of the same year fit my car? its the 6A13 engine. looking at the physical shape and size of the FTO box it looks exactly the same as mine but would the gear ratio be different? or is there a common fault with the bearings collapsing in mine that could be relatively easy to change?

Many thanx
Adrian

Yeah it is not unheard of the lay bearings going on manual boxes , I recon you could get you box recon'd for no more than £300 as it is not that hard a job to do

I guess there is a good chance that an FTO ox is fundamentally the same, but it's difficult to be sure.

I'd go with Nutter and have your own box refurbed.

thanx. yea theres a few garages around my area that re-con boxes, just dont want to be ripped off by a dodgy 1. if the bearings have gone is there anychance it could have put a slight throw in the shaft or started to round the teeth of a few of the gears?

the only way to be sure is to strip the box , but the normal bearing to fail is the one on the output shaft so worse case is that you need to repace that .

If you find a local garage and ask who they use for gearbox repairs and use them , but give them the box and say you want full diagnosis before any repairs are to be completed

on the vr4 it seems to be the input shaft bearing that fails

It was the input shaft bearing that failed on both of our V6 manual gearboxes.

well worth getting it fixed.
lucky in the galoon it was just the inputshaft bearing that needed replacing,
the one in my estate had all the brearings changed.
but now at least we know they will not need doing for a very long time to come.

i cant rememebr how much it was in the end for all the parts.... £200-ish come to mind, might have been a bit more, but we are lucky as garrys dad did all the work for nout.

Well, it was only the input bearing on Mesobitchy's estate - but as we were planning on keeping the car until it dies, we decided that whilst we had the box apart - to do all the bearings. Total price was around £250 for every single bearing. Plus we didn't know how long/far it had been driven with the knackered bearing.

In the galoon (elnevio's old one, now owned by Duo), we caught it VERY early - and I knew I wasn't keeping it forever, so only did the one. The parts for that came to around £90.

Plus - of course, free labour always helps! ;) Thanks, dad! :)

thanx

its a piece of piss.. you do need a press though to press the bearing on and off

I sent my gearbox off last week and had it back 2day. had all the bearings changed, all new seals on everything and gaskets £250. thought that was a really good price. another question tho, when i bought the car it had the clutch, flywheel, pressure plate and starter motor removed. (placed in the boot)looking at the clutch plate it doesnt state what side dits on the flywhheel, they r usually stamped. ne idea which way round it goes? flush side against the flywheel or the protruding part against the flywheel?

Manual gearbox repair in Swansea, South Wales. (john the box) as every1 calls him. Had an MOT last week and its been off the road 4 just over a year and the only thing it failed on was pitted discs on the drivers side (front and back).
