so come on peeps, what's the verdict? Are the drive shafts on an auto different to a manual? or is it the transfer box shaft that is wrong? before any fecker try s being funny I have worn out the search function and all the results are vague at best, at worst incomplete.
According to ASA the drive shafts on an auto & manual are the same part number :huh2:
If its the drive shaft then who reckons an evo inner joint will fit our drive shafts?

According to my ASA, manuals have MR246169 "Shaft assy front axle drive left hand" and autos are MR246173

right i'm off to beat seven bells out of my copy then.

so who's willing to take bets on wether an evo inner joint will fit?

and also was the inner transfer shaft that the drive shaft is driven from the same part number on autos and manuals?

As Mo says, the shaft in the transfer box is shorter for a manual VR4. The transfer box is interchangeable, as are both of the driveshafts. I assume that the manual passenger side driveshaft is slightly longer to compensate for the shorter half shaft, but the inner joint takes up the slack anyway.

You can use the auto half shaft on a manual car, but to stop the gearbox oil leaking out you need to install the driveshaft seal badly - i.e. don't push the seal fully home into the box.

yeh with the shorter shaft the driveshaft will compensate for the 10mm thats missing.
as a temporary bodge i have done the dodgy seal fix, its just not my style, and I don't trust it either, but it saves the box marking its territory every time it parks up

I did it on mine when I converted it to manual a LONG time ago! I now have the manual half shaft to put it the car, but just don't seem to get the time to sort it out! The not-quite-pushed-home-seal bodge job is still working fine. When it starts leaking I'll have to find time to sort it properly!

right peeps, a quick update, the auto half shaft is 291mm long, and the evo 4/5/6 one is 286mm long and fits a treat /woot /woot :beerbang: :bananadan
no more oily stains every time i park up.
so the definitive answer is that the half shaft on the manuals is shorter by 5mm.
