Hi Guys

Thought I should introduce myself, anyhow I'm Dan I run a company called DB-Power.

I've mostly owned 200SX's over the past year but have always fancied a VR4 :)

I currently have the following fleet:-

2 x 200SX's (S14a & S13)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/dans13/Washed1-1.jpg

Westfield with SR20DET conversion (hopefully will be road legal by the end of this month :D)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/dans13/Photo0298.jpg

Nissan Patrol with a skyline engine, running about 300ish bhp in a 4x4. This is what will be going and the VR4 replacing, it's fun but very awkward around town and sadly gets eyed up by pikeys alot of the time so I dare say one day it will go walk abouts :(

Anyhow I've been told there's a buyers guide but can't find it, has anyone got a link?

Anyhow good to finally get signed up and say hello :)

It will be nice to finally get one and also see what my company can make for them :sunny:

Dan :)

Hi Dan,

Love the black S14A. I was looking for one myself before I bought the VR4.

Welcome to the club :)

Cheers for the warm welcome, the westy will get another seat :)

So basically the VR4 only really some from minor issues such as tappets, which can be replaced and their brakes seem to be shocking (easy fix, it's what we specialise in).

As for tuning, whats out there and what are the engines/transmission capable of? looking for either a manual or tiptronic.

I know the 200's (esp the SR20DET) ones are good for around 400bhp ish on standard internals :)

Members here have run 400 on standard internals (Gowf) but his is probably the only example of that much power.

You'll find the manual box is better suited to this kind of power than a tip so if you're looking for big tuning then go manual. You'll also lose less through the drive train. (something like 10%).

Brakes can usually be replaced with decent pads and disk combos ( or you could go bigger if you feel necessary although my personal opinion is that they are great with carbotecs and decent fluid.)

upto about 330-350bhp is an easy ish place to get to without too much work

Around 7% is lost because of the torque converter on an auto.

Welcome to CVR4, Dan ... great looking S14a you have there, I like those. Also, that Patrol with a Skyline engine is a bit different!

Welcome aboard! That Patrol looks wicked!

Tuning wise, Valmes ran somewhere in the region of 500bhp on standard internals! Gowf is indeed running 400bhp. This is still in the "breaking new ground" area, so budget for a catastrophic failure at this level...though I don't think you'll have one for a good few thousand miles with proper maintenance.

Transmission is an interesting one. The manuals are highly similar to the Evo design, so will take a fair bit of abuse. Certainly 500bhp on an evo gearbox seems possible, though again they need some sympathy at this power level.

The auto is a bit of an unknown. If you're upping the power, you'd be stupid not to fit a transmission cooler and amsoil ATF. The car can cook the Mitsubishi standard fluid on a normal track day, so a cooler is eminently sensible if you're modifying.
There are a couple of Known evos (GTAs) with 400+bhp on the Invecs II so it can be done.....longevity is again an unknown however.

A lot is possible, but very few of us have the budget to keep rebuilding :D

Oh, and the standard turbos are WEEEENY!

The Auto's typically don't seem to mind a bit of power or abuse, they just die at random for no real reason, on both stock 260hp cars and on more modified cars.

I've personally been running 228kw ATW, around 400hp for about 2.5 years now and taken it to a few track days as well, never had any problems and I don't beleive the engine has deteriorated in any way at all, it still runs and sounds sweet.

If you buy a facelift then EVO Brembo's bolt straight on, on prefacelifts however the hole spacing is less and the Brembo's don't fit. Because you say brakes are your speciality (I did notice the big calipers on the S13) you'd be a very popular person around here if you managed to create a fairly cheap big brake upgrade kit for prefacelift owners.

Hi & welcome to CVR4 Dan. Some very nice motors you have there.

Love the patrol. Talk about stealth.

Cheers guys :)

I've seen a tiptronic one I quite like, as it seems quite hard to find a manual at reasonable cost :(

Brake kits will deffo be on the horizon, probably nothing to stupid just the evo 7-9 front setup on the fronts I think :)

As for power levels, I'm happy with a normal 350bhp and I hear you about the auto box cooler, I would have thought they would of had one though

I also don't mind pushing the boundaries a bit, having built quite a few engines, one being a 700bhp level RB30DET in a S15 Silvia :)

once again cheers guys :)

Dan,

Ive fitted an autobox cooler since my overheated after 6laps at Castle Coombe on the final lap. Once cooled down it was fine though.

Now with the cooler its done 12laps of the Nurburg, 8 in auto mode and the rest in tiptronic and it performed faultlessly. In fact the Tip mode really surprised me at how easy to get used to it was on the racing edge.
Especially at the ring where it helps to keep the revs up as you know the next bend has a horrendous hill ! The auto would have steeped up a gear at that point.

Hi Mike

Was it easy fitting the cooler i.e. are the take off's on the box for a feed and return?

Dan :)

I personally didnt fit it but did watch and it looked very easy, gear box oil feed and return pipes are located just behind the nearside headlight. Plus loads of room in front of radiator or in behind nearside fog light.

Just to be clear, the autobox is cooled by a heat exchanger in the bottom of the radiator at the front of the car. As you can imagine, this is somewhat inaequate under very heavy use. Simply inserting a proper air cooler in line prior to this heat exchanger allows it to control the temps of the gearbox properly (i.e. you cool the mission fluid, and the heat exchanger then warms it, serving the dual purpose of keeping the box at optimum temperature, and removing some unwanted heat from the radiator.

Cheers guys I've bought one now :)

This one:-

I can't get over how much of a pleasure they are to drive though, they are just lovely :)

I've got a few plans up my sleeve with mods already, 1st is a brake kit as I've managed to warp the standard discs in less than 48hrs :(

Here is what I've mocked up already:-

once this is sorted I think I'll start on some power upgrades like a decent FMIC kit :)

Just for the record, my auto does not have an additional cooler and I have done quite a few track sessions with it (Nurburgring, Castle Combe, Donington) and never had an issue with the ATF getting too hot. But then, I was quite anal about the fluid and never let the Amsoil in there get more than 12k miles old.
