hi had my v6 24v estate for 4 months wot a car love it
gearbox getting noisy but goes away when clutch depressed
prob input bearing but thought id check gear oil level b4 i put it into garage
anyone know where the filler hole is i can see a couple of possible bolts
but dont want to break anything i think its either the 17mm bolt or the one with a spline head both are on the front of the box nearest the radiator
is it one of these or am i as daft as i look

that noise is the release bearing fella, pound to a pinch of salt it is. And if it is youll be wanting a clutch not gear oil

Release bearing get noisy when cluch is depressed! Not released...

-ahem-

actually no, its when the pressure is on the bearing and forcing the worn bearing to run as intended that the noise will go away. When pressure is released the bearing will flop about like a knob in a shirt sleeve, thus causing the noise.

You are 1/2 right tho if the bearing is totally fubar it will make a noise when depressed but that is usually a sign of worn fingers on the diaphragm spring.

I can clearly remember those funny noises release bearing made with clutch pedal down... Well, the car couldn't move anymore after a week... So yeah, it wasn't in very great shape at last

exactly the same happened 2 the 1 i just bought.the guy who owned it b4 me took it 2a garage thinking the clutch was gone as when he pushed the clutch pedal down the noise went. but they stripped it down in the garage and the clutch was like new but when they spun the gearbox shaft it rumbled like hell. so they put it back 2gether and he drove it home bt could only get a new box 4 bout 500/600quid. so i bought the car off him. its the main shaft bearings that go. didnt change the thrust bearing coz i could only get 1 with a clutch kit. Had all the bearings, seal and gaskets done 4 £250 all in. used the old thrust
bearing and its fine now, runs smooth as.
