Master K (or possibly HMG1K) should know this one.

But I think it was only ever an option (rarely-ticked) for the UK estates.

Definitely not an option on the JDM cars, AFAIK.

Or, is there an easy way to determine whether we have it or not by poking our head under the back of the car?

this might seem daft but WTF is self leveling suspention?!

I presume you are refering to a non VR4 estate?

I good way to check if you've got it, is to put something really heavy in the boot! Then drive round the block and if your ride height has gone back up to normal then you've got it and its working!

okies... so 9 2'x2'x2" patio slabs shoud do the job then?
/lol

i done that an boy did it lower the damn car, done this about 3 or 4 times over a distance of about 3 miles each way. soon as they were out the car returned to normal hight. ie you could swing a bus under it! /lol

soooo you mean to say if i had self leveling suspention the ride hight would not have gone low, even with the weight in the back?

It would have gradually gone back up.

GalantOnly knows more about it I think. A good indication IIRC, is that the springs are a different shape.

I also believe that there is usually a small decal somewhere (like where the 4WD sticker on the VR-4 is, or on the tailgate, possibly). Obviously, with yours having been repainted in the past, if it had have had self-levelling suspension, that decal may have been taken off anyway.

But it seems yours is like 99% of UK estates - boggo!

i had self leveling suspension on a turbo deisel montego estate i had for carring crap round in, and it had massive shocks on the back but nothing else attached to it and it worked great but mercs on the other hand had hydrolic sevlf leveling suspension with an extra hose coming off the shock to a pump.

not sure how the self contained shock type ones work but they do.

All UKDM estates had self-levelling. It wasn't an option, it was just there.

the springs on self leveling are wider, if you try and put them over a normal shock it will just slide over and wont sit in the cup. i wouldnt mind self leveling on mind to be honest as i quite often carry weight, not sure if it could be done?

UKDM = UK Domestic Market - i.e. cars specifically built for sale in the UK. So UKDM 8G Galant estates effectively include the 2.0 I4 and 2.5 V6 NA engines, in the varying trim levels available - GLS, V6-24, Sport, Elegance, Classic (I think?) - might be one or two more!

The Ralliart VR-4 estate, although slightly modded for the UK market, is still a JDM spec import, albeit through 'official' channels.

ok cheers, so the levelling suspension CAN be added to the VR4s then. definatly need those then as i have a huge 77L LPG tank in the wheel well!!

Theoretically, but I can't begin to imagine what problems there may be with the extra transmission weight, ASC, etc., if any. Perhaps some others may have an idea of potential pitfalls of adding self-levelling suspension to the VR-4.

Just been out to check our V6, and the rear springs seem to be roughly the same size top to bottom, and the width of the widest part at the base is just over 4".

So I guess that means we've got self-levelling?
