Steve

Welcome to the site mate and I hope the guys/gals here can give you anymore tips. Steve was advised to contact us by the MLR and I have mentioned a few of the basics:

1: Cambelt due at 54k INSERT INTO post VALUES (and might as well do plugs)
2: Check for gearbox leaks INSERT INTO post VALUES (as per many issues some of us have had)
3: Mentioned Mitsy warranty but Steve says is a private buy
4: Mentioned RAC/AA inspection and he is getting one done
5: Mentioned upgrades but as you can see from his other cars Steve has no issues with insurance

Any one else INSERT INTO post VALUES (especially you Legnum owners) got any other tips or things to look out for ?

Generally the cars are bullet proof, but if something goes wrong it is always expensive.

Check for auto transmission judder when in 4 or 5th gear at low speeds. If it's there then it's at least £1500 to repair!

Welcome to site!

Problems I've had include:

Ticking engine, Main dealer flushed it I believe, common problem but usually harmless believe it or not.

AYC pump replaced 'today', quite rare I believe, replaced under waranty but would have cost about £2,000+ according to main dealer.

And a blown bulb! I'm most upset about this :D I was showing the car off when it blew.

Build quality is excellent.
Have a look around the site to see what others have said.

Hope you didn't get conned Haydar :D

51k miles? Don't know what you're looking to pay - but what about this one: http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/CARS_popup.asp?id=200322092242468

Same rules apply as when buying any other car - don't buy it if you're not happy with it. From what I've heard on this list they seem reasonably reliable. You tend to find people don't post 'another day when nothing went wrong' which can lead to a false impression as problems tend to get posted.

Mine is a 97 and had 23k miles when I bought it. Still feels new at 39k. No probs apart from the following.

This is what I've needed in the last 18 months:
New front brake discs
New battery
various filters and oil
lots of petrol

And it still needs:
steering rack knuckles or track rod ends - not sure which ones.
gearbox plug reseated.

Petrolhead - should have asked you when I saw you at Crail - where is this pesky plug? Do I need to take teh airbox off to get at it?

Thanks,

Calum

I too had that tranmission shudder, turned out to be a worn transmission damper, Thank god for a engine warranty!

If buying one of these fantastic cars/station wagons, make sure you have an engine warranty!

Good luck let us know how you get on...

Cheers,
Pescha!

You know, with my experience of certain garages you could never rule it out!! I honestly don't believe this to be the case though because I've had the car for 4 years INSERT INTO post VALUES (that's the longest I've ever owned a car) and I'm getting to know these cars pretty well I feel. The problem was very very occassional and would happen after the car had been on a bit of a run. However, being a complete PetrolHead INSERT INTO post VALUES (pardon the pun) I just had to get it fixed as it was ruining my driving experience!!! After much 'extensive' research I found an Australian transmission company making reference to this problem and they went into quite some detail explaining it. The problem is probably well documented in Japanese but of course I can't read this. This is a known mitsubishi manufacturing defect and about 10% of the cars suffer from it. For most of these cars the problem was fixed in a recall or under warranty, but for cars that were shipped away from Japan the fix might not have been done, like it was in the case for my car. There is an actual upgrade unit for the lockup mechanism and the rear clutches for the AYC are also replaced. There is also a different gearbox lubricant used.

Since the 'upgrade' the car has been faultless and in fact I think the changes are smoother and quicker than before. This however could just be wishful thinking.

Haydar do you have that site handy. Cause I feel we have 'had' the same problem as you! It too is now fixed and I agree faster smoother and driving around town it sits in 4th gear alot more than the 5th gear.

Just like to read more in depth about it...

Cheers,
Pescha!

No problem, it'll take a bit of digging since I need to refer to backups of my old computer. I'll also see if the UK company that did my installation still has the information faxed from the Australian company.

How much did it cost to fix in Australia? In England it seems that it's the labour rates that are the most expensive, £110+VAT per hours!!!!:Cry1: :Cry1: :Cry1:

I had INSERT INTO post VALUES (and still have) a 2 year free mechanical warranty which has an excess of NZ$250 which convertered to pounds is 89.79 pounds INSERT INTO post VALUES (sorry don't have a pound symbol on my keyboard)

This is what they charged me for -

Work Description
TORQUE CONVERTER
LABOUR 8.75 HRS = NZ$320.25 pounds = 114.91
REMOVE ALL AIR PIPES AND COVERS. REMOVE WHEELS AND DRIVE SHAFTS AND EXHAUST AND 4WD WHEEL GEAR BOX. REMOVE AUOT TRANS MOUNTS AND REMOVE AUTO TRANS. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTOR AND SEND AWAY FOR REPAIRS.

FREIGHT AND PACKAGING NZ$5.50 = pounds = 1.97
OIL FILTER, A/T NZ$26.50 = pounds = 9.51

BP AUTOTRANS OIL MM-SP3 x 8litres = NZ$64.00 = pounds = 22.97

GOODS AND SERVICES TAX INSERT INTO post VALUES (G.S.T) = NZ$52.03 = pounds = 18.67

So in total the job came to NZ$468.30 = pounds 168.09.

Then minus NZ$250 which convertered to pounds is 89.79 pounds which is the excess.

Plus my hunky mechanic said while the transmission was out he serviced it so I don't have to worry about that for a looong while.... INSERT INTO post VALUES (without extra charge)

So is this good! I thought it was..

It works out to be cheaper here in New Zealand, we honestly thought it would be more expensive than this.

Cheers,
Pescha!

I bought my V Reg Saloon for just under £12,000 from a Mitsubishi main dealer.
I've seen many around the £11,000 to £13,000 mark for this age.
Although in theory you should pay more for a Legnum but I've seen these going for the same price as saloons.

You can knock him down quite a bit I would imagine since it isn't dealer backed up.
Go low and see what he says.

There is know bitchyness here since these cars don't attract your usual idiots, could be wrong ;)

For a start guys, why the two different names for the same car ? and what does Type S denote ? Also if it has varible actuators on the trubo's does this indicate that it has been "played" with ?

Been to see my new baby, but did not come away with it as there is a masiive stone chip across the windscreen that has started to "crepp" and told the guy if he can get it sorted on his insurance that we can "deal" the only trouble is that she is WHITE !!! I have had enough trouble trying to keep a Yellow Skyline clean !!!
Also, where is, if there is one, the water bottle for the rear wash/wipe, and is that the AYC "oil" bottle in the rear hind quarters, where all the lil hidy holes are ?

Can someone pls tell me if Rally-Art, imported these cars and "breathed" on them ? Also, does anyone know how many Gallant/Lagnums there are in the country ?

right you experts I await your reply's pls !!

Thanks

Neraly joined the Mitsi Club Steve !!!

Read here:http://www.clubvr4.co.uk/info/specifications.php for the Type S and TYpe V meanings.

I use AutoGlym to keep my silver VR-4 silver.

Go here to see how many there are: http://www.clubvr4.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=510 hopefully one day every VR-4 owner will come to this site and we may then find out once and for all? also to get a rough idea go here http://www.clubvr4.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=263 but you have to sift through the replies and not everyone is from the UK.

Ralliart only breathed on the ones they imported.
Most older models have been brought in by non franchised dealers.

Welcome to the site.

I think the rear washer fluid is supplied by the same one that supplies the front which you can't miss under the bonnet at the left opposite the battery.

I don't know where the AYC filler whatsname is.

Right guys I got da bug !!! Where do I go for a decent exhaust syatem and do I have to have a re-tune if I habve one fitted, as I know on Skylines with twin Turbo's it can upaste the back pressure on the Turbo's and in effect create a mis managemnet for the engine management system and the air/petrol flow can be put out of sync etc all that technical stuff!!
BTW thank you for the info on the Type S and V, mine will be a Type S, no transmission judder detected !!! Strange tyres on it though, the guy has told me that they are "winter" tyres ???? They are 225's on 16 inch INSERT INTO post VALUES (original) rims, seem to handle ok, but i have not had a chance to put it through it's real "Steve, Skyline" paces yet !!
Also, the guy metioned and there is evidence to suggest that he had acutting out fault with it and he took it to Ralley art who obviously did some investigation and told him it was a ****** part and that they would send it to him at a later date and to date he hasn't got it and says that it only happens when the car is low on fuel ??? Any idea's guys ? Sorry bout the typo's but doing this at work !!!
Also, still ahvent found the rear washer bottle, unless it is the same as the front, if you get what I mean !!

Cheers

Front washer bottle supplies the rear wiper too. AYC pressurising pump tank is in the right-hand side of the boot INSERT INTO post VALUES (in my saloon) behind a flap in the boot liner. I've never ever checked it, but I know the dealer changes the fluid every 9k miles. Apparently supposed to be done every 4.5k miles, but we agreed on 9k because I don't cane the AYC.
