Hi

I have an autobox that whines, all gears above about 30 MPH. I think its the autobox though a trans specialist says it could be the transfer box, the whine changes pitch with gear changes and gets softer as the box heats up after a couple of miles. Fluid nice and red with no burning and changes gears no problem up and down the box. Has anybody else had this, can't really hear it outside of the car either just inside. Any other owner had this, checked some old threads but can't find anything conclusive.

Thanks

Definitely could be the transfer case. If you pop it into neutral does it still whine?

Have you changed the transfer case fluid?

Thanks Brad going to check.

When driving knock into neutral no whine it subsides (its like a continuous chirping noise mosr apparent under acceleration)
Noise only apparent above 2k rpm and never becomes intrusive as such.
Gearbox changes positively in both auto and tip modes.

Hope this helps.
Thanks

my autobox whines as well at about 2000-3000 rpm only slightly and only when engine is under slight load. It has done this for the last 3 years ever since i have owned the car, not a problem as far as i am concerned.

but only time will tell and i think 3 years is long enough.

I think it's TC noise...mine does it too....a sort of "ghostly wooooo" noise relating to engine revs AND road speed. It seems to go once everything is all warmed up.

Hasn't worried me so far :D

Yeah it's transfer case noise. Drop the oil in the transfer case and make sure it's okay - if it looks like silver glitter than your transfer case is on its way out.

The noise will get louder with revs and also as time goes on it will be more noticeable - you might also notice a whirring noise when slowing right down to go over bumps and into driveways.

Thanks for all of the replies I will check the oil in the transfer case at the weekend.

Sorry..I meant Torque Converter, not Transfer Case.

Transfer Case is more of a drone.

Mine started doing it about 3 weeks ago. Sounds like the North Wind o'wer
Ilkley Moor through the telephone lines. My ATF is lovely red but should I do a full flush do you think?

Yep that is exactly what I have got I suppose a whistle is more closer to it than a whine, my son thinks it sounds cool because it sounds like a 'turbo' noise. I called it a whine but defo more like a whistle and worse when cold.

Forgot to say this box is a replacement low mileage box which has been fitted when old one went bang after the rad failed. Spoke to supplier and they drove it in the original car and they reported no noise. It was taken from a car with low mileage which had been side swiped on its offside, not heavy but enough for the insurance company to write it off.

I would put money on transfer case.

It will just get louder and louder over time, then it will sound like mine....

Do all your tyres have even tread depth / pressure?

Tyre pressures are ok but they are wearing on the outsides.
