View Full Version : Should I be offended?

Spoke to a car dealer yesterday about a possible sale with my VR-4 as a part exchange. Needless to say he never heard of the model, so he asked if he could do some research. Phoned back today to say he'd spoken with someone in the midlands who imports them from Japan and from what he'd been told he could offer me no more than £2K as a part-ex.

Considering I paid £8K just over 2 years ago, I'm wondering if I should be offended :sigh: at being offered such a low price, snap his hand off in the current market climate or sit tight and see if things improve over the coming months. BTW I got an internet quote from that car buying company of £3.5K, which I thought was low as well.

2k is a bit low. The jap auction price will be about that, maybe a bit less, but of course a new car would have to be freighted to the UK, MOT'ed, etc.

I would expect it to sell for around 4k at the moment based on similar cars in the uk.

To me being offered £2k in part exhange is right - that's not to say that is what your car is worth.

The dealer buying in your part-exchange at £2k means he has a wider profit margin - hitting the circa £4k bradc mentions above means the dealer would be doubling his outlay

I'd say you're better off selling your car privately to hit the ~£4k mark.

The market isn't what it was and, personally, hanging around in the hope values will rise is false hope as your car will age in years and the price will continue to fall to reflect its age. :-)

VR-4s are a specialist vehicle, so the main dealers are bound to shy away from them. Far better to sell it privately, to someone who knows what it is. There will always be a demand for fast/interesting cars from genuine enthusiasts, so don't panic and sell it too cheap.

Thanks for all the feedback Guys. I must admit I was expecting more in the region of £3K as a part-ex, knowing that it would be sold on for about £4.5K by a dealer - based on what I am seeing up for sale at the mo'.

I'd be happy to sell mine for £4K right now. Just doesn't seem to be any takers :sigh: Thinks I'm going to wait until after Xmas and then try again in earnest.

My local dealer was offered a 2002 Saloon with just 24000 miles on the clock. He offered the owner £2400 for it. Needless to say the deal didn't go ahead but the guy at the dealer told me that he had heard through the grapevine that it went for 3k privately.

How long ago was that Mark? Recently or a while ago?
