apparantly the morons in wellington have decided that ALL modified exhaust will need a LVV cert at the cost of $200 in order to pass WOF.

anyone else heard of this?

From some light googling...

"From 1 December 2009, if your vehicle is ordered off the
road (pink or green stickered) by an enforcement offi cer
for non-compliant exhaust noise, you are required to have
your vehicle certifi ed by a low volume vehicle (LVV)
certifier as having passed an objective noise test before a
new WoF can be issued. Your vehicle is required to pass a
new objective noise test every time it is ordered off the
road for non-compliant exhaust noise."

What is the Objective Noise Test?

"The objective noise test is a stationary tail-pipe noise test
procedure based on international standards and can only
be carried out by an approved LVV certifi er. If your
vehicle passes the objective noise test, the LVV certifi er
will attach a label to the vehicle and issue a certifi cate.
The cost of the test is about $130–200, depending on
location. It is a one-off cost if the vehicle passes the test
first time, and provided the exhaust system is maintained"

That's not too bad then, as long as it's enforced fairly. Not going to cost you unless it's excessive.

I'm confused, does that mean my aftermarket exhaust would need certification?

mattnz

Only if it gets ordered off the road for the exhaust noise.

Ah,that's unlikely then..:D

Actually, reading over the pdf, it seems that 'excessive' is compared to stock, so it might be a problem :/

My VR-4 is one of the super rare ones with two exhaust tips from factory, find me another one and measure the noise, then get back to me :)

I think Note 2 takes care of that :S

Modification
7. A class LE, MA, MB, MC, MD1, MD2 or NA vehicle that has been modified so as to increase its exhaust noise output must have the exhaust system inspected, tested and certified by an LVV specialist certifier as having passed the LVVTA objective noise test, unless:
a) the increased noise output is clearly below (Note 3) the applicable noise limits, and
b) has been inspected in accordance with the requirements in this manual, including those for equipment, condition and performance.
8. When a vehicle has been certified by an LVV specialist certifier as having passed the LVVTA objective noise test:
a) the owner must produce a valid objective exhaust noise emissions test certificate (Figure 11-1-1), and
b) the exhaust system tailpipe must be fitted with a valid LVVTA noise test label (Figure 11-1-2).

that tells me that every exhaust needs to be certified.

The exhaust noise output from a class LE, MA, MB, MC, MD1, MD2 or NA vehicle is not less than or similar to the noise output the vehicle (or a vehicle of a similar type – see Note 2) would have had when it was manufactured with its original exhaust system, and:
a) the increased noise output exceeds the relevant noise limit in Table 11-1-1 when assessed by the vehicle inspector:
i. using their own experience,

that bit tells me that the WOF inspector can use his/her descretion as to if its too loud..

See what i mean ryan about the VIRM being a **** to understand!

Ah doesn't sound good,so will they be testing for this when you go for your WOF?

well that just it..who knows? i spoke to a mate of mine about it who is a wof tester and the way he reads it is that if your car has a noisey exhaust, you need a LVV. however he also said you can read it as you dont, only if the WOF inspector asked for one
