I am seriously considering a 2-seater hardtop/convertible.

1: MX-5 Folding Hardtop
2: S2000 2.2
3: Z3 2.8/3.0

Or if I must get extra seats in the back, a coupe/sedan of some sort.

1: Porsche 911 Carrera (993/996) model
2: BMW 330ci / M3
3: Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart

If I can make my VR-4 last another 4-5 years (which it should given the level of servicing I do :D ), this next choice should last me until I retire.

I would be in for most likely an Audi S4, a TVR of some kind or a Lotus Elise..

I know two of them are 2-seater sports cars, but dont need a back seat as I have a work car..

In saying that I have an inkling for a 4wd german v8.. lol

Those are hideous! Richard: Anything except MX-5 or *koff* hairdresser's car *koff* I mean... Z3.

Does it have to be a soft top? What about a M-Coupe? Has 4 exhausts and the E36 M3 engine?

If its like for like then probably late shape Legacy Spec B - build quality is so much better on late Subarus.

Probably will have another VR4 before the Legacy as my fruit cake wife loves them !!!

I would go for a Evo 6 but there holding there price really well. £8000 for a good one & the dont have the space we need with the three boys.

Think I'll have to wait till they grow up & leave home.

Im hankering after an old 911 BUT given my history of sticking with Mitsubishi i reckon the next one will be an EVO.

I like the 8 and 9's like Pete and Johns but absolutely love the 6.5........hmmmmm

I've done my stint in VR4's all six years of it. I've been looking at Audi S4's (V8)
Got an oldish Scooby WRX Wagon at the moment. I got it for practicle reasons (still working on the house) and 4 wheel drive for getting to work during the winter. Have to say after initial reservations I'm quite liking it now. Not the prettiest car but fun to drive, especially in the snow./rally. Still got the 3000GT and the Cooper S for when the weather is OK.

(Still looking at an S4 after seeing an old TopGear test at the weekend. Quicker around the track than an M3)

It is something I've often thought about and what the VR-4 eventually gets replaced with will largely depend on what's available at the time and more importantly, the price.

So far I'm leaning towards either a Volvo S60R, Audi S4 (B5) or an EVO of some sort. If I get an EVO then I will keep the Legnum for doing shopping, picking up large items etc.

I'm also tempted to go down the German V8 route but the more affordable ones, eg: 540i tend to be mated to automatic transmissions. I have only ever seen 1 x manual E39 540i in New Zealand.

If I get an EVO then I will keep the Legnum for doing shopping, picking up large items etc. For me the VR-4 was the logical progression for me after 3 previous Galants, why not get the ultimate Galant. Some say the new Lancer (Galant Fortis in Japan) is the true replacement of it, which is why it is on my list, albeit at the bottom.

This is why I am trying hard to think of something completely different from it. The cars you mention are very much similar competitors and of the same ilk. I am really after something a bit "lighter", but not superlight like an "Elise"

My next car should be a different experience entirely. I may do some test drives closer to the replacement time. In the meantime, I'll continue to mull over the many options, as I still aim to make it last. Next year will be an expensive year for it. - It's 2nd "D" Service (not sure if it will make it to a 3rd) and new tyres ($3-4,000), but still cheaper than a replacement.

Seriously, what are your professions guys? I mean, I hear Volvo S60 / Audi S4 / Porsche or Mitsubishi Evo's as possible replacements for the VR-4...

I am struggling with my ST-R which cost me a lot of my hard earned money and my goal is to have a real VR-4.

My option for the next car is clearly a Galant Fortis (or Lancer) with the 2L diesel engine. A friend of mine has this car, tuned to 200hp (with re-programmed ECU) and I am really jealous when I see his fuel consumption. His car needs around 6.5l diesel on 100km when he drives sporty. Cruising gets around 5l on 100km...

I've spent enough money on Legnums over the years to be able to walk straight into a mitsi dealership and pay for an EVO X! I'd prefer my purple VR-4 over any stock EVO though :D

What surprises me is that in Germany (and in fact Europe) the EA0 Galants were never sold with 4wd, yet in Japan it was a very popular option on normal non-turbo cars. Even on the Galant Fortis, 4wd is available in Japan on all models, but not in Europe.

... and I am really jealous when I see his fuel consumption....You don't drive a VR-4 and worry about fuel consumption, or any other performance car for that matter. The only annoyance I have about fuel consumption is the constant backwards and forwards to the Service Station, but a quick squirt on the "loud" pedal removes it.

Here is a comparison page of some cars similar to the VR-4 is characteristics, i.e. 4WD Mid-Size Saloon (http://www.carfolio.com/specifications/models/comp/?car=27104&car=162294&car=134079&car=81477&car=139909&car=21780&car=121308&car=99660&car=121891&car=129063&sortOrder1=1&sortOrder2=2&sortOrder3=3)

You'll see the Galant VR-4 is still one of the highest bhp/tonne and even beats the new Lancer EVO X

The newer cars just get heavier and heavier, which stymies their potential.

Realisticly im considering an airtrek turbo, lancer cedia turbo.
at this stage, but prices at the moment for VR4s are slowly dropping. So i may stick with the vr4

I'd give the Legnum to the Mrs if I could get her to drive the thing.

The Kia Cerato does have the Theta II engine in it which is virtually the same as the 4B12 Mitsi engine. You can also get them with a 6 speed manual (but not in NZ) which is something you can't get from Mitsi. They only have 170hp though which is pretty pathetic

Looking to probably sell mine maybe later this year so I've been seriously looking into it. I really don't drive it to it's full potential most of the time, and I've got the Camaro for trackdays now, so don't need such a good performing daily car really, though I don't want something too slow either.

Possibly Audi S6 Avant, but very rare and all very pricey & high mileage. Been thinking of Jaguar X-Type 3 litre v6 too. Tried a Saab 9-5 Aero before and didn't like it, as well as a Legacy but older one, so might look at newer 3.0 spec B.

Other possibles ones are BMW 5 series estates, Volvo v70r awd, Honda Accord estate but bit slow, an out there choice could be a Chrysler 300c estate with the 5.7 hemi V8.
